Hi Erick! I've been to the beach at Mauna Kea and it is delightful - beautiful white sand and the water was crystal blue and calm. I am leaving for the BI this weekend with my husband and his daughter. This time we plan to check out Hapuna Beach to see the difference. From what I've been reading and responses I've been getting, Hapuna Beach seems to slightly surpass the beach at Mauna Kea. Hope this helps you.

Hi Erick, my husband and I spent Fathers Day at hapuna Beach. What a wonderful place. Its a picture post card. The water is so clear, you would have thought they poured it from the tap. White sand beach, lots of palm trees lining the back of it. Showers, bath houses and loads of picnic pavilions. The sand in the water is hard packed easy to walk on, and very calm. there are a few reefs about 10 feet out, perfect for a mask and snorkel and you are still only waist deep. You will love it..even a snack bar and lots of parking..Dona

I'd give the nod to Hapuna but both are very nice. The waves at Hapuna are only high (unless a storm) during the winter months. I've body surfed 6-8 ft waves there during the winter. What makes it so nice is the sand bottom. It makes for a much nicer landing should you wipe out. PS: If you play golf, play the Mauna Kea course. It has one of the best rated holes (#3 I believe) in all the U.S.

My sister and I stayed there last Xmas and are going back this year...we stayed at the Hapuna instead of the Mauna Kea...both beaches are nice, but I thought the Hapuna had less of that Blue-haired crowd feeling. Shuttle back and forth is very easy. Waves are fair, but very swimable. Pool at the Hapuna is cool!!!
