Hampton Inn - Madison Square vs Chelsea

Hi,

I'm looking to use my Hilton Honors points for two nights in NYC. I have a choice between the Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden and the Hampton Inn Chelsea. They are only about 8 blocks apart. Does anyone have a recommendation between the two? Is one more convenient to metros? Is one safer than the other? Cleaner?

Thanks for the insight.

I don't care for the area immediately surrounding MSG. I would go for the Chelsea location.

The MSG area is pretty icky & crowded with tons of people going to Penn Station and concerts and sports events. Go for the Chelsea location (1 block from my office). It's quieter (yet, probably safer) and is better for shopping and dining. (Yes I know that MSG is near Manhattan Mall and Macy's but shopping there is a nightmare).
Both locations are near subways.

The MSG area is pretty uniformly disliked by NYers and found to be very central and attractive by visiting tourists b/c of it's proximity to the Empire State building, Macy's and other major chain stores, and good transportation.

If you want your hotel to be in an area where you can walk to some nice non-touristy restaurants for dinner, stay in Chelsea. If you're more interested in being near mainstream shopping and tourist sites the MSG location is slightly better. Neither one is unsafe or inconvenient.

We stayed in Chelsea and we are happy we selected that option. The hotel was near the metro and lots of great shopping. The hotel also seemed to have a newer and cleaner feel than the other one...and fresh baked cookies every afternoon. Good advice we received! Thank you!
