Colin, having stayed at the Hampton Inn and traveled to KW many times, your best bet would be to find a Bed & Breakfast in Old Town. The price in many instances is the same or lower than a hotel. More importantly, staying at a B&B will give you the real charm of going to KW and within walking distance to where you want to go. Mind you, the Hampton Inn in KW was nice, but it is on a busy strip out of walking distance from Old Town. I think the hotel/resorts give an anticeptic feel which completely misses the point of KW. Do yourself a favor and check out the Key West web sites for a B&B in your price range and preference. Feel free to e-mail if you have any other questions. My wife and I go to KW every year and love it.

I second the recommendation to try and stay in Old Town, whether it's a hotel or B&B. If you stay at the Hampton Inn you'll have to rely on a shuttle and/or cabs. All the sunset activities and most of the restaurants and tourist attractions are on the Gulf in Old Town.
