Half Moon Bay is a nice small town between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. It's on a part of the coast that has farms (mostly artichokes, brussel sprouts, commercial flower growing) as well as wild coast. There is an "old town" part which has some cafes and shops. I know the Ritz Carlton opened up a coastal property in or around Half Moon Bay - look it up on tripadvisor if you need recommendations. Half Moon Bay is about 30 to 40 minutes drive from S.F., depending on your start point. If you drive Highway One down from the city, you do have to brave the Devils Slide stretch of road, which is curvy and narrow and often subject to rockslides in the winter(I take it in stride, but I'm a local - too bad I never get to really look at the spectacular ocean view because I'm the driver!). The alternative is to drive on Highway 280 to the Highway 92 West turn off. You won't be on the coast this way, but parts of that road are pretty narrow too. Hope this helps.

Half Moon Bay also has some nice walking beaches and dunes. The town has some nice little art galleries as well as cafes and restaurants. It is a favorite place of mine to take the dog on a nice Sunday in spring. It's big activity is the annual pumpkin festival, which brings in very big crowds. BTW the drive down 280 to West 92 is very pretty, if you decide not to take 1--280 runs by Crystal Springs, which is quiet lovely.

If you are going this time of year, it's great to go down to the docks and see the fisherman bring back dungeness crabs. It's great, and the crab is fresh. Uniquely this time of the year.

If you go a little further down South, you can drive along the coast and hit Big Basin Park which you can then take some day hikes.

A bit north of Half Moon Bay proper is Princeton-By-The-Sea, where the fishing fleet is located. There is a great little divey place to eat there called Barbara's Fish Shack. OMG, they have the best chowder, crab sandwiches and fish and chips. It gets crowded around lunch time.
