Haleakala National Park - Biking

Is it worth it to get up at 3:30 AM to see the sun rise from the top of Haleakala? We'll be on our honeymoon and are looking forward to sleeping in! they have tours that begin at 9AM that sound more appealing but i don't want to regret not seeing the sun rise if it is worth it.

If you're going to see the sunrise on this tour, you won't be getting up at 3:30am, they pick up from the hotels at 1:45-2:45am (depending on the time of year).

Sometimes the sunrise is spectacular...and sometimes it's not... I've seen some breathtaking colors, and I've been standing up there with the view socked in by clouds and getting wet from the rain falling on me. It's a crapshoot.

I have no comparison but my family chose to drive themselves up mid-morning. None of us had the interest in getting up in the middle of the night.

It IS an amazing sight! But I can't imagine that sunrise would have made it any better. Not to mention it's freezin' COLD up there (when you've just got your tropical clothes layered on you).

Hi Larnarn,

Hubby and I did the sunrise bike ride tour for our honeymoon and we LOVED the bike ride, but I thought the sunrise was a bit over-rated. I thought it was pretty, yes, but I think I expected more - we went on a very clear day too. We went during June and I think I expected the sun to be so much larger - but it didn't seem that big. Plus it was freezing cold up there.

I would definitely recommend the bike tour - my favorite activity - but my recommendation would be to sleep in and go up to the mountain at your convenience.

Have fun!
Tracey

My husband dragged me on the bike tour. I had absolutely no interest in getting up in the middle of the night to see a sunrise and ride down a hill on a bike. Nonetheless, I had a good time and I am glad we did it. My husband loved it, of course. The sunrise was very nice but I found that I really liked the biking part. It was a fun way to a part of see Maui that we would not have otherwise seen. I think you should do it. It is an experience that you will remember forever.

I'm actually not going to do the bike tour, but will drive up. I get in at 6:00 p.m. I figure by the time I get my car and everything, I will be exhausted. Staying at the Renaissance Wailea and hope to go to the Maui Onion for a burger and onion rings and then call it night.

When I wake up (natural alarm), I plan to drive to the crater and have breakfast at the Kula lodge.

Good luck with the biking!

We just returned home from Maui and enjoyed the sunrise bike ride so much...had a beautiful view and it was a blast biking downhill. We used Maui Sunriders, the unescorted ride, was so nice to take our time and shop along the way, also had breakfast at Kula Lodge. Go for it!
