Group dinner in Charleston

Any suggestions on where a large group 30-40 should eat in Charleston? We're having a family reunion and have a diverse group and many children.

Good luck on the reunion. Most restaurants would consider that size group as a "banquet" and in order for everyone to be served at the same time they might limit your food selections. If casual is ok try some of the restaurants in the Shem Creek area, they're seafood, very casual, the kids could watch the pelicans and boats and run around outside.

You might have a hard time finding a place......we took a group of 20 people + families in February of last year and we were hard pressed find a "decent" restaruant willing to take us. After two weeks of phone calls, we ended up at the South End Brewery which I would not recommend at all for your group. Sorry I couldn't be more help but don't go to South End, it was a bad experience all around!

Where are you staying while in Charleston? If it's at a resort, or some of you are at a resort, many of them have scheduled "dinners" that might be able to accomodate you. One I'm thinking of is the BBQ/clambake they have weekly at Kiawah Island. It's a buffet outdoors with a specific menu and might be a really memorable event instead of just eating at a restaurant. The price per person for the BBQ might be kind of high, however. If anyone lives nearby to handle logistics, a catered event might be more fun and resonable - even at one of the parks in or around town. Some parks there might have the option of reserving a covered pavilion for guaranteed seating, etc. Even the restaurant at Middleton Place might be accomodating...

I just got back from Charleston. A group of us, probably 35 people went to Anson's. We ordered off the menu, were in our own room, had excellent food and service. If lidging is needed for some, I also recommend the Governor's House Inn. Beautiful bed and breakfast on Broad Street with excellent service. Just do not book a rental car with Enterprise. They close at 8 p.m., so if your flight is delayed, you are out of luck.
