Ground transportation to Port Liberty New Jersey
I am taking a cruise from Port Liberty New Jersey in September and expect to be flying into EWR. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding ground transportation? My friend and I will have two suitcases each (one carry-on and one medium suitcase for each of us).
We will also need ground transportation from Manhattan back to EWR. Any suggestions for the best way to do this?
I have never flown through Newark and would be interested in any comments you may have.
We are senior ladies and, although cost is a factor, so is convenience.

Taxis (or car services) are really your only logical options given your luggage and your description as "senior ladies"
I have no idea how much from Newark to Port Liberty, but there is probably information available from your cruise line or the Newark Airport website
From Manhattan to EWR, a car service , including tolls and tips, will probably cost about $70 in total. Try Carmel or Dial 7 websites for rate quotes and discount coupons. NYC taxis do not have to take you to Newark Airport (since it is out of state) and would likely coss much more.
By comparison, a train from Manhattan to EWR is about $15 Per person, but you'd still have to get to the train station, and you don't want to be dragging 2 suitcases each in Penn Station and throughout Newark Airport from the Airtrain to the terminal.

First, I'll address Manhattan to EWR. You don't say where you are staying, and the mode of travel I would suggest will differ based on where you are staying. For me, the easiest solution is to take a taxi to Penn Station and then NJ Transit to the EWR Airport station and the Airtrain from there to the terminal. Cost is about $15 to $20 each. (For double that each, you can take a car service direct from your hotel, so you have to decide if it's worth it or not.) For a little less, you can take the Olympia Trails shuttle bus, and that's a decent option, which drops you at your terminal if you have time. It's not good for a very early flight, though.
Now, to Port Liberty. I would strongly advise a taxi from EWR. It may be expensive (about $70 or $80), but the only public transit connection involves a combo of the PATH train and Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. It's do-able, but tedious with luggage and requires at least 2 transfers from EWR. Hence my recommenation. If you really want to do that, it's possible. Here's a link to the directions (scroll down for public transit directions): http://www.cruiseliberty.com/dirpark.htm

For senior ladies with 2 pieces of luggage each plus purses I would simply do cabs/car service - no question. Public transit will involved a lot of trekking and probably escalators if not stairs. Not a fun way to deal with all that luggage.
