My friend and I will be coming into NYC Penn early on a saturday morning about 8-9 a.m. and I'm interested in a cute shopping area to go to with cute shops and a nice place for breakfast that would be easy to get to from Penn Station. Any recommendations of shops and restaurant would be great - thanks!

Take the C/E Subway line direct from Penn Station downtown to Spring Street and walk East. You'll find great shopping there in Soho. Concentrate on Spring, Prince, between 6th ave and Broadway and you can easily walk down to Canal street from there if you'd like.

Other than bakeries and other food places, that's too early to find much doing on a Saturday morning. Very little (other than some chain stores) will be open before 10. Some small places open at 12, especially if they stay open later in the day.

To re-cap: Take a train to Spring St. and enjoy a long, relaxing breakfast at a cafe somewhere on Spring until the stores open.

Take the same line and get off at 14th street and walk to the meat packing district and have breakfast at Pastis. They open that early. Actual address is 1 little west 12th street.

then you could go down to SoHo. or walk around the meatpacking district a bit. or walk south and end up on Bleecker street which is very cute and if you keep walking far enough you will end up in SoHo. It's not as far as it sounds. But you should look at map to figure out where you are going.
