Green Bay on Labor Day? What to do?
We're driving from Madison to Green Bay through Oshkosh, then over the U.P. of Michigan to Sault Ste. Marie. I would like to see Lambeau Field. I've heard of Door County. Where should we stay and what should we see on our day across Wisconsin ending in Green Bay? Thanks.

You didn't mention how long you wanted to stay in the Green Bay area, but if you have the time, head up to Door County (the thumb of Wisconsin). It's very lovely up there with lots of nice shops, quaint villages, great food, and lots of cherry and apple orchards. We just spent a week up there and would go back again.

There's a Packer Hall of Fame/museum across the street from Lambeau Field. I think GB has an art fair sort of celebration on Labor Day, but not positive. I've a friend who lives there, will try to check and re-post with more info. Door County is about an hour from Green Bay (actually longer than that before you really start getting into the villages, etc), so it's not really a recommendation unless you had time to explore and enjoy. A bit north of GB on HWY 41 is the NEW Zoo, a compact and enjoyable place; there's also a new botanical garden. Hotel selections are pretty ordinary...Holiday Inn, Country Suites, Best Western. There are a couple B&Bs. There's a more upscale business conference sort of hotel at Appleton (25 mins south of GB) - Paper Valley Hotel.

Hi Roland,
As you drive from Madison to Green Bay, you will pass directly through Oshkosh on Highway 41. You may want to consider stopping at the Experimental Aviation Association's Airventure Museum. Oshkosh is world famous for it's annual EAA Fly In. The museum was fascinating - even for someone like me, who isn't an airplane afficionado. You can spend one hour to a whole day, depending on your interests. Check it out at: http://www.eaa.org/education/museum/index.html
IMO, the UP will be the best part of your trip - can't beat the natural beauty of Lake Superior. Don't think you would need to drive out of your way to Door County as you will travel along the north side of Lake Michigan along US 2 and the south side of Lake Superior. Consider a stop in Munising to see the National Pictured Rocks Lakeshore.
Happy traveling, Susan
