Any suggestions for a great place to get seafood in NY?

There is a fairly new restaurant downtown (Soho area) that is divine. It is called Fresh. Be prepared to pay about $30 for an entree though. We thought it was worth it. Loved the hip atmosphere, spacing of the tables, and the fish was delish.

If price is no object, Le Bernardin (W. 51st) is exceptional. I'd be confident in saying that you will likely eat at few places that are its equal - anywhere.

In bit lower down the price scale is Dock's Oyster Bar. It's usually solid.

An old reliable is the Oyster Bar on the lower level of Grand Central Station. It's been around for decades and is a real NY institution.

One last thing, Sunday and Monday are the two worst days to order fish, particularly when its the "special". A special on Sunday or Monday essentially translates to "the stuff we have to much of and are trying to unload before the new delieveries come in."

Most restaurants don't get weekend deliveries so by Sunday, it's been around for a few days.

for the best seafood in NY, my recommendation is Aquagrill

For a moderately priced seafood meal, Mermaid Inn on Second Ave. in the east village is new and getting great reviews. In the same category is Mary's Fish Camp and Pearl.

Blue Water Grill in Union Square is very good and not too expensive.

IF you go to Blue Water Grill whatever you do do not order the Sea Bass. It was like eating a big piece of fish fat.

Dock's is a solid bet. The Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station and the Whispering Gallery just by the entrance are classic New York institutions but do not eat anything but oysters or their oyster pan roast there. The NY Times gave the restaurant at the Oyster Bar a very bad review.

I'm with the Blue Water Grill camp and not the biggest fan of Aquagrill. I'd go to Aquagrill for oysters at the bar but I prefer BWG for fish dinner. I found Aquagrill too noisy, too cramped, service so-so, food was fine.

When I'm jonesing for a great seafood dinner I head to Peter Lugar's. I hear they also offer steak.

I also like Pisces in the East Village. Great fish and seafood of all kinds. Very reasonably priced.

In order to show my age, a question for NYCers - does anybody remember a fish restaurant downtown called Sweet's? Don't remember location although my brain says lower W side - I was there a couple of times long ago and remember it as one of those wood-floors-white-tablecloth sorts of places, with outstanding food. I suppose it's unreasonable that it's still around, but maybe a new name on an old place?

FRESH (in Tribeca actually) is fantastic. I've been several times and the seafood is extraordinary. All the other suggestions are solid options; I'll only add Shaffer City Oyster Bar for the best raw oysters (and Jay Shaffer is a great guy who *loves* his work). Enjoy eating in NYC!

go to chinatown. stop at any restaurant with a fish tank. Choose a fish. Have it steamed. enjoy!

I know it seems touristy, but how is The Sea Grill at Rockefeller Center?
I just downloaded a coupon from the Restaurant Associates site that will allow $50 off on a $100 check. My usual theory is that if places do this, they must not be great, but I've heard good things about this place.
