Great restaurants near Capitol Hill?

Sorry to say, but there just aren't any good restaurants actually on Capitol Hill (I've been waiting for the past 30 years). That may seem unlikely, but it's a place for lobbyists and Congressional aides. I'm not sure what you've heard, or why it must be on the Hill, but I'd suggest a change in plans if you're looking for good food. But if it must be the Hill, then try Barolo on Pa. Ave. S.E. (between 3rd and 4th). The food is okay but very pricey. Suggestion: look at a Zagat's for good prices in the NW area (no farher than 10 or 11th Streets, NW). Such as Cafe Atlantico or Jaleo. Both are good and the prices are reasonable. Don't bother with the SW section of the city - there's nothing good there. It really depends on the type of food you prefer - D.C. has it all. It's just that the area surrounding the Capitol has never caught up with the rest of the city. Vidalia is nice, but if you're going that far from the Hill, there are dozens of good restaurants. Invest in a Zagat's, by all means. And if you have a car, there are great places (especially Asian) in the near surburbs of Va. You could even use the Metro to go to Vietnamese places at Clarendon Square (Orange line). But I find that Zagat's is really useful, and I live here. Good luck. If you have more questions, send me an e-mail.

Joe is absolutely right about restaurants on Capitol Hill. There are no good ones. The restaurants that are there, such as La Colline are vastly overrated and hardly great. They are frequented mostly by lobbyists, members of Congress and their staff because of the proximity to the Capitol. Joe has some good suggestions. Venture out into the city; it won't bite. Don't confine yourself to the Hill. If you do go to Vidalia, which I love, try the garlic mashed potatoes. Yum!

Had a wonderful dinner at 'Red Sage'. It is within walking distance from the Willard Hotel. If you are adventurous diners, think you may enjoy ...if not, there are other excellent choices. If you are staying in Capitol Hill area, don't let this limit you, as you could just take a cab to another DC locale. Also have enjoyed dining at Vidalia. Think poster was correct re: Zagat's. It is a good barometer.
