grand junction

We are planning a trip from Sante Fe (via Durango) to Vegas. We have a total of 2 weeks. I was looking at the map and would travel through Grand Junctiuon. Is it worth spending a night or 2 or does anyone have any suggestions. We have been to Moab in the past.
Thanks JK

We did a 3 week driving trip in NM, CO and UT a couple of years ago and spent two days and two nights in Grand Junction. For me that was plenty of time. We really enjoyed the drive and some light hiking at the Colorado National Monument. It would be worth spending a night in GJ in order to do that tour. We visited a winery and went horseback riding but felt like we were stretching to find stuff to do the second day.

I hope you get some replies from people who know the area better.

If you liked the red rock of Moab area then you will like Colorado National Monument. I think it's worth at least one night.

Grand Junction doesn't have much to offer, other than CNM, but it's a convenient place to stop. Ouray is prettier. I wouldn't stay more than 1 night in GJ.

Are you going to visit the Black Canyon of the Gunnison? Going to the Black Canyon would mean a little detour to the east from Montrose, but it's well worth a few hours. If so, you might get a kick out of a B&B/llama farm in Cedaredge, which I don't think is too far from the Black Canyon.

You don't mention what time of year you are going to visit. If in July and want to make that side trip to the Black Canyon of the Gunninson would suggest you continue a little further north to Crested Butte and the Maroon-Bells. Flowers that time are year are usually spectacular. If you visit Colorado National Monument there are several very impressive natural bridges in the park. Either a hot, dry walk in July or can drive (4x4) road most of the way. Be advised however if the road gets wet, you will be mostly likely stuck until it dries out as base is made of bentonite (clay like material). This happened to me a few years ago in early spring.

We will be going in the mid to end of Sept. With all the posts I guess I will rethink the plans. We are going to travel from Grand Junction to Vegas. We wil now have 2-3 days to get there. We have seen Bryce, Zion and Moab areas any suggestions would be very helpful.
Thanks Joan
