Grand Canyon Trip
I am planning a trip to Arizona in June. Our Base is Flagstaff. We have booked one night at Kaibab Lodge North Rim, 1/2 day mule ride there and a one day raft trip, at Peach Springs. We are also planning a day trip to Hoover Dam. My question:I really want to avoid the crowds on the South Rim but do want see everything, Any suggestions? Day trips to Sedona, Oak Creek, And Slide Rock are planned. We have 8 days. Any suggestions for this trip would be helpful.Suggested restaurants would be apreciated. Thanks I am so excited about this trip.

Jeanine,
Sounds like a great itinerary. Especially including Hoover Dam, wonderful site. A couple of things I would include in your trip are allowing more time in Sedona, and leave time to drive through Jerome. Sedona is fascinating, so many artists there, the red rocks are amazing. There are some great little shopping areas too. Jerome is a funky little hippy town, that you will enjoy strolling through. It's a windy drive, but well worth it.
As far as the Canyon, well, I've only ever visited the South Rim, and actually was there this year in February. Depends on when you are going, as to whether or not it will be crowded. It wasn't crowded in February at all, and I was there last July, when it felt like a 1000 degrees outside, and surprisingly, it wasn't crowded then either. There are tons of websites on Sedona if you need more information. Have a great trip!!! and take lots of pics!

North Rim should be enough to see the GC, especially with the mule ride.
Been to both N&S rims, and either will provide the essentials (i.e., overlooks).
On N Rim see Pt. Imperial, Bright Angel Point and Walhalla/ Cape Royal (for sunset). Basically follow Cape Royal Road.
Make a dinner reservation at the N. Rim Lodge ahead of time. The place is very typical (that is, nice) and the view is great - so be sure to get a reservation during daylight hours.
I usually state this fact to GC posts: According to the National Park Service, the average person spends less than 30 minutes actually "looking" or viewing the Canyon, and the average time spent in the park itself is less than one day.
It will take you many hours to get to the North Rim, if you start in Arizona. So, you either take the East or West route. Either way, you will also be near some spectacular National Park units in southern Utah, including Bryce Canyon and Zion (among others). These are even more awesome than the GC in some ways. If possible, make the visit to at least one of Bryce or Zion since you will be so close. Kanab, UT would be a good central place to overnight that is near the N. Rim and the S. Utah parks.

A day trip to Hoover Dam from Flagstaff is not a good idea - it is a 225 mile trip. You might consider the following if you have flexibility and decide not to use Flagstaff as a base . From NR go directly to Bryce NP and then Zion NP. You could then head for Hoover Dam going through Las Vegas. From LV next stop could be Sedona. NR to Bryce is 150 miles; Bryce to Zion 90 miles; Zion to LV 160 miles; LV to Sedona, passing by Hoover Dam about 270 miles. The red rock formations in Sedona are pale in comparison to the red rock formations seen at Bryce and on the approach to Bryce. This is a circle route and you won't be traveling over the same road twice.

Jeanine, we are planning a trip to Sedona to Grand Canyon(SouthRim)then west to Peach Springs for the river trip and then continuing west to Vegas. Although we've booked the river trip already,I've yet to hear from anyone who has done the Hualapai trip. Do you know anyone that has done it? What was their experience? We're going in August. Will you let me know what you thought of the river trip when you return? THANKS
