What are you planning on doing when you get there? Some people are perfectly happy spending 30 minutes or so looking over the side of the cliff and taking a few questions. Others want to hike part-way down, or hike all the way down and camp for a night or two. The longer you want to stay the more likely that you will want to take your own car. As to whether a convertible or an SUV is worth it - how large is your group? Are you trying to impress your girlfriend? What time of year will you be traveling?

Well we will spend there only one day so I don't know how much hiking I can allow myself. I'm going with my wife, just two of us. I asked about the type of car because I thought it would be much better thing to enjoy the views and the weather in a convertible. Also was curious whether there are off-road sites that would require an SUV.
Not trying to impress anyone, I just would like to have the best experience possible. We're going there in 10 days.

If you're going to the South Rim, you don't need to worry about going off-road. As for the convertible, consider whether you want to drive for 5 hours one-way with the top down. I wouldn't want to deal with the sunburn, extra noise, etc. Most of the scenery you'll see is at the GC itself, not along the way.
