I am going to the Grand Canyon in Feb and wondering if we should stay there and if so which hotel. Also any suggestions on a tour (bus or jeep) of the Canyon?

Call Bright Angel Lodge and make reservations for Thunderbird Lodge, all rooms with rim views.

There are no jeep tours within the Canyon simply because there are no roads in the Park other than those that take you along or to the Rim. The Park Service provides a free shuttle along the Rim and through GC Village, but it's not really a tour.

The best way to see the Canyon is to walk either along or below the Rim. The only other option is to drive along the Rim and stop at various overlooks.

yes...stay somewhere on the rim if you can. the only other option would be that small town (can't remeber the name) about 7 miles away.....although i don't know if there are any hotels there. we stayed at the bright angel several years ago...it was OK for the price (about $50)...it was a small room with a private bath but no shower, just a bath tub. the bed was way to small for 2 people...but after hiking all day it didn't bother me. no TV and i don't think there was a phone....not so good if you like to spend a lot of time in your room.

If you are going in Feb. I assume you're going to the south rim rather than the north. El Tovar looked the nicest to me of all the hotels on the south rim, and has some rooms with canyon views, but it was pricier than the others. Thunderbird, which someone else mentioned, is very close to El Tovar and some rooms there also have canyon views -- it is less expensive than El Tovar and much more modern looking (less attractive -- more like a motel). Bright Angel Lodge & Cabins is also right on the south rim. I stayed there, in one of the historic cabins. It did not have a canyon view but the price was right at $70 per night, and I liked it fine. The cabins are not fancy, very plain, but the location is great and you are not in the room much. They do have some nicer "rim cabins" with canyon views that cost more. Go to the amfac website to check availability & make reservations.

Try the Moqui Lodge in Tusayan, just a few miles south of the park entrance, a very nice place to stay.

Dress warm because you will be at 7,000 ft. altitude at the South Rim; cold nights, warmer days, dry weather. Pack a down jacket or vest.

Try to stay in the park on the rim if you can. If not, there are a number of motels in Tusayan, including big chains like Best Western, Days Inn, etc. We stayed at the Moqui Lodge in the summer of 99, and, unlike the above poster, don't really recommend it if you have any better options. We did a lot of driving back and forth from the rim, which took up a lot of time, so if you can stay on the rim it will be a lot more convenient. Moqui Lodge had a reasonably nice restaraunt, with a pretty good breakfast buffet, but our room was kind of small, drab, and not especially clean (to be fair, they did give us a discount after we complained about the condition of the room, after they neglected to clean it up after our first complaint).

El Tovar is THE place to stay....the views take your breath away. The restaurant is also first class.
