GPS, Laptop, ISP and Digital Camera (etc.?)
My parents are planning a trip from Florida to Alaska for next year. They asked me to help them by researching how to set up a system of sending and receiving emails, uploading photos, using a GPS, etc.
While I have some knowledge of laptops and digital cameras, I know very little about GPS technology. I'm also looking for an internet service provider that they could use along the way.
Anyone have any suggestions or comments?

We use earthlink.net for our service provider. It has local numbers from nearly everywhere. We have used it from Egypt, Japan, all over the US (including Hawaii), Thailand. The only place we haven't been able to get a local number is where he is now, Shanghai, China. But he did email us fro Manilla and Japan. It's great because I can use it at home and he can email us using a local number from wherever he is. Hope this helps. For gps, you might try Sporty Pilot, a place that sells aviation stuff.

Ernie,
What is peacefrogs? Interesting . com
Anyway, re GPS: An On-Star type of set-up may be perfect, as it is ready made for the car/camper. Hand held units (Garmin III Plus, e.g., ) have antennae that can attach to top of car. In my opinion, GPS is great for 2 things: 1) You know where you are (mostly for fun) and what is "on the other side of that hill".. and 2) You can print your route on any atlas/map program. A GPS will allow you to download your trip to your computer. Make sure your parents PC can interface with the GPS unit.

Gee, I remember the days when you used to go on vacation without taking an entire bank of IBM hardware with you. Back in those days, a person could actually enjoy being where they were, instead of spending time "dialing up" and checking their E-Mails. I also remember a time when you didn't go into the backcountry unless you were real comfortable with your ability to get back out. GPS affords too many people too many opportunities to get lost, or worst.
