In Napa in St. Helene: TraVigne, Trilogy, Terra
In Yountville/Oakville/Rutherford area if Napa: Auberge du Soleil, Mustards Grill and the French Laundry. In the case of most of these eateries, reservations should be made as early as possible.
In San Francisco, Greens at Fort Mason is wonderful, very different, lovely views. Perhaps the best cuisine in town is found in the Ritz Carlton Hotel dining room.
In Oakland, Oliveto's is not to be missed and in Berkeley, Chez Panisse is sublime.

Our favorites in Napa are Mustard's and Tra Vigne. In Healdsburg the Madrona Manor dining room and in Santa Rosa, John Ash & Co. Green's is interesting but is vegetarian--lovely vegetarian albeit. The latest darling of SF is the Waterfront which is "fusion cuisine" and Rose Pistola in North Beach which is Ligurian (northern Italian seafood) We also always have a good meal at Kuleto's on Powell Street near Union Square. There are so many good ones in SF---be sure to make reservations well ahead---before you arrive preferably.

1. Domaine Chandon: gorgeous winery with outstanding restaurant, exquisite gardens and a champagne tasting flight to go with.
2. Terra: in St. Helena has stolen the show from M. Chiarello at Tra Vigne with fabulous New fusion type food: So. of France, Italian and Asian. Very very good. This is a foody temple.
3. French Laundry: if you can stand the extravagant prices and are a big foodie this is the current hot restaurant.
4. I would go to Cafe at Chez Panisse rather than the restaurant. Easier to get into, a menu with selections rather than the prix fixe at the restaurant. In Berkley. This is a pilgrimage for some as it is out of the way from the city or Napa.
