The location may not be an exact fit, but the food and service at this place are so outstanding that I have to mention it:
Shanghai Tea Garden, or maybe it's Our Place Shanghai Tea Garden, I'm not sure. But it's at 141 East 55th, between Lexington and 3rd.
We stumbled on to it in September and had the best Chinese dinner we've ever had, and one of the top three dining experiences we've ever had.

Got it for you!
Ollies (212 921-5988), at 10?west 44th street,((off 7th avenue) right in the middle of the theatre district
It's an offshoot of the 2 Ollies restaurants of the upper west side (started up near Columbia University, then 80-something & Broadway). I call it upper-west-side Chinese, in a good sense--good, attractive restaurant INEXPENSIVE (most dishes, other than seafood, under $10) (though it was touted when opening as chinatown-style, with a lot of all day dim sum, and noodle dishes). It's one of the only places I will bother to eat at in the theatre district rather than eat near/at home or work.

Ellen here's another vote for Ollie's in the Theatre District right in Times Square, or for a bit more atmosphere the Ollie's on Broadway around 67th St. across from the Sony Theatres, we go there all the time.
Oh and if you are going to be here you might think about tickets to events at Lincoln Center, lots going on there all summer.
Enjoy your trip to NYC.
