Golf in Makena

We get to golf at Makena golf course probably March 9th,(will make tee time this week). They have a north course and south course any opinions on either course would be helpful cause we have to decide. We think we will shoot for a tee time around 11 am as we are staying on the other side of the island past kaanapalli. Ok thoughts on these two courses will be helpful Thanks in advance

We've played both, a few times, and expect to play them again next month. I am partial to the North course, it goes up higher so the views are a bit better, and while it might be a bit tougher than the South course, they are similar. The North is a little more rolling, but the South has two holes that go right down to the ocean. The par 3 is a little like the par 3 at Pebble Beach, where you tee off to the green, with the ocean as your backdrop, and the next hole runs along the ocean back to the hotel, though the ocean is only in play if you have a real bad hook (I learned the hard way). The 10th on the South Course is a real nice par 5. I still prefer the North, but it might be because I got my "once in a lifetime" Hole in One there! They are both nice courses, with great views; you can't go wrong with either! /Ren

Hi Cleo,
I played both about 5 times each last November. I prefer the North course which plays a few strokes tougher, but they are both worth playing.Cheers, Al

Cleo, I prefer the North course. More of a challange. Yes, there are no holes directly next to the ocean, but the south only has two anyway.

But IMO, try either the Dunes at Maui Lani or the municipal course Waiehu.

Both are way better IMO. Especially Waiehu. It is a muni, so forget anything fancy. But it is a great design with several holes by the ocean, and almost all with great views. Conditions are good, design is good, and very cheap to play. I actually prefer it over the Plantation (at Kapalua).
