Going to Reno July 16-25th

I have never been to Reno and wanted to know what to do there? We are there plenty of days to explore outside of Reno, but have only come up with Carson City and Tahoe. Any suggestions for while we are there?

Virgina City would be fun. See links:

Also, the Reno/ Tahoe site is a good one:

And you could alway spend a day (or 1/2 day, in the Truckee/ Donner Lake area:

I have the same question. We are going the last of August for about a week and also need suggestions. I would love to hear from you after your trip if you have suggestions for my Aug. trip.

Do a search, there was a fairly long thread last week or the week before. Virginia City is a good way to spend the day. Leave early so you can get parking..the town fills up. It is very touristy but just scratch the surface a little bit and you will find some very interesting history, the silver was VERY important to San Francisco in particular and the Northern Army during the Civil War. Depending on what you want to do...you could make a circle..go up Geiger Grade..HW 341 into Virginia City, stay a bit, then continue on and down the hill on the other side..Silver City and Gold Hill..good food at the Gold Hill Hotel, and then hang a right on HW 50 and go into Carson City. They have an interesting museum there etc. Or you could do Virginia City one day and Carson City the next and maybe continue south on 395, hang a right on Jacks Valley Road and have a beautiful drive out to Genoa..Pony Express stop at one time. Wally's Hot Springs is there and some good restaurants, little shops etc. You could go north from Reno out to Pyramid Lake. It's on the reservation and has a great visitors center with a history of the lake and a lot of artifacts etc. The scenery around the lake, especially late in the day, is spectacular. Artown, a month long festival of the arts will be going on and they really have some good stuff. I'm sure all the hotels have information and also the Convention and Visitors Authority will have information on events happening during your stay. There is a Farmers Market every Thursday on Victorian Ave. in Sparks...they close off the street and there are many vendors..fruit of course but other things..baked goods, jams, jellies, mustards, vinegars..etc. It starts at 4:00 and goes till 9:00 I think. It gets crowed for sure at 6:00 or so...when everyone is off work, so if you decide to check it out, go early. You can park at the Nugget or there is a parking garage by the theatre on "C" street.

Final round of the Celebrity Golf Challenge at Edgewood in South Lake Tahoe is Sunday, the 16th -- lots of athletes and celebrities play. It's fun to hang out. Stay for the evening and see Rascal Flatts at Harvey's Outdoor Amphitheater -- great place to see a show. CSNY is also playing there on 7/22.
