Going to Redwood - need advice

Hi all,

Planning to go upcountry mid-Apr. Understand it's raining now and even hailing. Any predictions for 3 weeks time?

We've got Mon till Thu, starting from SF. I figured to take 101 all the way up to Eureka or thereabouts, spend Mon/Tue night there, then head down on 1 to Mendocino and spend Wed night there, then back to SF on Thu.

Can anyone tell me about the times involved? Distances on the maps look fairly short but those can be deceiving.

Thanks!

Hi Moot

The common saying is if you do not like the spring weather in Humboldt county wait a few seconds 'caus its going to change. The way the weather has been up here this year I say expect it to rain heavy at times.
You can make it from the golden gate to Eureka in 5 hours if the traffic is light and you do not stop. Because of all the rain 101 has been closed several times in the last few months check with cal-trans before you leave.

The drive from Eureka to Mendocino is another 4 to 5 hours. It gets real slow on highway one at Legget to the coast. Springtime in the redwoods is a great time come on up and enjoy yourself.

Have Fun

depending what time of day you leave and yes the weather the drive to eureka should take about 5 hours. i would recommend you visiting arcata and trinidad while there..eureka is okay for a day but there are much more beautiful things outside of it like moonstone beach, fern canyon etc. two days is a pretty short amount of time to spend there. also arcata has some great food (went to college there) tomo sushi, ricos tacos which started at as a truck but got super popular, los bagels, larpin in trinadad, crosswinds for breakfast.

Thanks for the replies. We figured on using Eureka as a base to head north or south. It's a pity but we don't really have the time to spend... we only have a little over a week and we intend to see Yosemite as well. Hopefully there will be a next time.

Is the weather starting to clear up?

We love that area. Definitely take the time to find Fern Canyon. It is like another world. Another favorite place of ours is Patrick's Point and Agate Beach. My husband grew up in Ferndale and if you like charming towns, Ferndale is it. We enjoy visiting. Have fun. Tina

You might want to consider that 101 is adding another lane in Santa Rosa, I believe, so you will want to avoid rush hour at all costs, and perhaps check traffic conditions before leaving SF.
