The people who ask if it is safe to go someplace are those who have heard that it is not safe. Still, they want to go. Why ask them to look inward? They are looking outward, maybe for the first time. Trying to expand their interests.

Actually, QC said to Look Inward when asking abut where to eat and shop so we could know what to recommend.
I think sniffy would be more like the answers some people get when they ask if they can wear sneakers to Paris, that sort of thing...really sniffy is when someone says they would not be caught dead in that place or wearing this outfit..soooo sniffy! is when one says that they did it and it sucked so you don't need to do it.

But then, I have a high threshold for sniffy people, I used to live and work in NYC and I think one gets a thicker skin when it comes to sniffy folks.
Even NYC sniffy folks can be irritating.
I think this thread is an excellent example of a different sense of humor, some get the joke and some are offended.

I'm afraid I must agree with the nay sayers like mrwundrfl on this post QC. It's smug, sarcastic, self satisfied and intolerant. The biggest problem with it is that many posters (like me)come to this site for the first time and don't realize there's a search function so will never read your post anyway. But I don't think you intended it to be read. You were venting. I think you need a rest. Or as someone else said, if it really bugs you, don't answer the posts.

I agree that the original post made some very valid points. Its quite difficult to give good answers to vague questions: "where should I go on my vacation? or please recommend AFFORDABLE hotel". Affordable for who? -- Bill Gates or a group of college students? How can one give a response? So many times the only response is -- tell us more. I think that is the real point of QC's original post. We want to help you - help us do a good job.

IMO internet forums have become a sounding board for stressed out individuals with nowhere else safe to vent.
Maybe QC's original post prevented him from "kicking his dog" when he got home.

One person's harsh is another person's witty, I'm on the witty side. And I would write a similar post about SF if I could be as eloquent. If it is OK to post generalized questions it is equally OK to post responses suggesting that it would be better to not ask generalized questions. I'm sorry but there is something mildly annoying about posters who can find their way to this board to ask a question but aren't observant enough to notice the search function.

Yes I can see everyones point, but hey I researched everything before I came, looked on Fodors, went to the library and had a really brilliant first trip to New York - I Love NY!! Thank you to everyone on Fodors who helped me. But please tell me - is it normal to have to leave your luggage unlocked in security here in the USA and walk away?? We flew from Heathrow to JFK and people were picked at random to open their cases, whilst present, and be checked as is per normal here apart from the normal checks, but I was really shocked to have to leave my case in the US and not be present whilst the case was searched, we were actively "pushed onwards" and didn't see our cases again until we returned to the UK.... Has it not occurred to someone that a terrorist could so easily worm their way into this kind of job and plant something.... I'm really shocked. Please put me straight and tell me I'm so wrong. I did think that maybe when we retrieved our cases from Heathrow they maybe would have a tape across to show they'd been secured, but sadly I was wrong, our case was still open to anyone who cared to try. SCARY!!

I will remain neutral on this, except to tell the the previous poster - Tulips to bypass Olive Garden. It is a chain Italian Restaurnat. Nothing against it, never ate there, never will, since I live where there are Fantastic authentic italian restaurants, just like NY..Experience the authentic and creative......

Ah, QC, some of the folks are not understanding the NY humor. I guess we will have to save it for cocktail parties. I don't think it was the intention here to insult people, I know I have done some fairly stupid things while on vacation (or planning one), and this was meant in a tongue in cheek sort of way. So, sorry to those who took offense.

I had a look at the site, and can understand why people would go there, especially with children; $7.95 for an unlimited portion of pasta! Now I understand why you think Europe is expensive. You certainly couldn't eat for that amount here!

Sure, there may be new people on here that don't realize there is a "search feature on this forum"- I seriusly doubt though that they have never heard of Google, Lycos, Yahoo etc. etc.

Some people think this thread is "sad, beliddling, mean" etc. ... Where are these people from?! Asking someone to please let us know what they like to do specifically (instead of just saying "where should I go") so that we can help them better is now considered mean? GIVE ME A BREAK!! My only guess is these people are embarrassed because they felt QC was talking to them.
