Going to Hawaii

My husband and I are going to Hawaii in Sept. and I would like to know is it better to rent a car in Oahu or use the bus service? Also, how long does it take to get from the Kona side to Volcano Park and can it be done in a day?

Funny Logos.

...and more to the point....a Honolulu fodorite to the rescue...:

If you don't object to wild freeway traffic and weird off ramps, then by all means rent a car. If you are good with maps, rent a car. If you prefer not having to rent a car, Honolulu has a top notch public transit system. But it's not on your schedule, it's on TheBus's schedule.

From Waikiki, TheBus has tons of routes:

If I were staying on Oahu first in my Hawaii itinerary, esp after a long flight, I probably would not want to be encumbered by a car for at least a day or two. So TheBus is a great option and one for you to consider. And there are always taxis. Bring your cellphone.

For your Big Island part of the itinerary:

Yes it is possible to drive to Volcano from Kona in a day. It will be a long day, but if you get an early start and starty to head back by 3:00 you can get back to your Kona hotel by dinnertime....superb!

Have a great trip!

Hi kalena! If I may add....I think if you have a good MAP and co-pilot, it's easy. I lent my cousin a detailed TMK Map book for Oahu and she said it made everything immensely easier when driving. however, my aunt was not such a good co-pilot. They did OK, though.

Indeed. A co-pilot is essential. ;-)

We stayed in Oahu for 3 days and we were fine without a car. Busses were OK-a little crowded to Hanauma Bay, but it was worth seeing. Also took a few group bus tours to the other side of that island.
The drive from Kona to the nat'l park was absolutely the most FANTASTIC, scenic drive. Gorgeous ocean views and quaint little towns. We had so much fun we made a day of it. It can definitely be done in a day. Enjoy
