You will probably have to fly into Chicago or Indy and then to South Bend. They have a nice airport but limited cities that are served direct. And if you are looking for a hotel room--better get it TODAY.

Really the best way to get there is to fly United or AA. They will connect you thru ORD.
I can agree about booking hotels VERY early. You should also remember that prices skyrocket near campus (ex. Hampton Inn: $390-450/nt). If you get a room you will be lucky.
GO IRISH!!!!

We have attended games the last few years. Get a hotel reservation immediately! We like staying in Mishawaka(?) more reasonable and all the restaurants in that direction. Traffic is bad anywhere but you avoid the traffic of people coming for the day. Get there by 10 to go to the bookstore and park in someones yard(about $10) near the campus. Chicago O'Hare is brutal Friday afternoon. We fly in the last flight Thursday night and stay at the airport, sleep in and drive up Friday morning. We actually go to the bookstore then without all of the crowds. Have fun, GO IRISH!

If you want to stay in Chicago you can take the train from downtown Chicago to Southbend. See Below.....
The South Shore* electric rail line connects South Bend Regional Airport with cities throughout northwestern Indiana, with a final destination of downtown Chicago, Illinois. Low cost rail service is ideal for commuters and pleasure travelers alike. Travel time to and from downtown Chicago is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes.

No offense charlotteguy, but susannah, the last thing you want to do on gameday is have what what normally be more than a 20-30 min. drive near the ND campus. Traffic is a mess, and you really want to stay on US 31 or in Mishawaka, as coral22 suggested.

I'm a recent alum, so congrats on getting to go. God, I hate BC.
You will definitely have to connect, and if I were you, I'd try to avoid Chicago, as I always had problems there.
Get a hotel now ... and they will be very, very expensive.
Have fun.
