I don't know where you are but Glacier National Park has glaciers. Don't how much longer it will though. You can hike to Grinnell Glacier. The glacier isn't spectacular but the hike is. If you plan to go, it would need to be in July next year.

Look at www.AlandSueJohnson.com and click on the bison picture. You can pick Glacier from the menus from there. We put together several pictures to show what the trail looks like. You can also easily see Jackson glacier but I don't know how tough the hike is.

To be impressed you may need to consider Alaska.

I have to agree that Alaska would be your best bet. Get a copy of Milepost and plan a trip with the info you get there. The most impressed I have ever been was on an Adventure Bound boat ride up the Tracy Arm Fjord out from Juneau to see the Sawyer Glacier (can't remember which face...). Huge skyscraper pieces of glacier calving from the face every few minutes. Spectacular!! There are also many all over the state you can hike to with little problem. Don't do the programmed tour thing - too much time wasted waiting on the cattle herd you're traveling with...

Considering that it's too expensive to go to Switzerland, Alaska might also stretch the purse strings too much.

I realize that you asked about the U. S., but consider going across the border into Canada. A short hike in Banff from Lake Louise gets you close to glaciers.

Adjacent to Banff is Yoho National Park. It takes some planning. (The only reasonable way to get into the park is by bus. You should buy your ticket precisely two months in advance or you may not get on the bus.) One of the short hikes takes you to four or five alpine lakes and glaciers. It's my absolute favorite hike.

If you take the road between Banff and Jasper park, there is a huge glacier there. You can purchase a seat on a bus-like automobile that goes onto the glacier.

Good luck!
