There is plenty to do in San Diego that should keep you very busy for 5 days. La Jolla is of course part of San Diego so tha's a no brainer to visit it. I would do something like this -
1. San Diego Zoo
2. Gaslamp, Coronado and Harbor - take a harbor cruise and afterwards check out Coronado. Go to the Hotel Del Coronado as your starting point.
3. La Jolla and North County - check out the beach towns like Del Mar, Cardiff, Encinitas, and Carlsbad.
4. Fun day excursion - take the train to San Juan Capistrano. Check out the mission, have lunch, a pleasant little town. If you drive you can also visit San Clemente and walk on the pier.
5. Balboa Park and Little Italy - Visit some museums and then for dinner check out all the great restaurants in Little Italy

BWT, I write Local Wally's Guide to San Diego (google local wally) if you want more ideas!

Thank you. The San Juan de Capistrano suggestion is particularly welcome.

In addition to all the above, we loved the tour of the USS Midway.

Garynng, I checked out your webpage and find it interesting. I live in San Diego too and delight in reading about many of the restaurants you recommend that we love too. You have a list of restaurants with ocean views and wondered if you have been to Carolines which is near Scripps Institute and the north surfing area of La Jolla Shores. We have only eaten there once as it is popular and extremely crowded but the ocean view is spectacular and the food is great.
