Getting from Greenbelt to fun area of DC

I will be staying in Greenbelt, Maryland for a few days and know from experience that there is not much to do there. I would like to take the metro into a fun area of DC where it is lively at night and plenty of bars/restaurants. I know I can take the Green Line from Greenbelt, then transfer to the Red Line to get to an area like Dupont Circle but that would probably take close to an hour each way. Are there any areas comparable to Dupont Circle that I could get to more quickly from Greenbelt?

Look into the U Street area. I think it is on the Green Line.

Either U Street or Gallery Place, both on the Green Line. Lots to do in both areas.

I don't know anything about clubs in the area, but check out Busboys & Poets and Ben's Chili Bowl while you're in the area.

Ethiopian restaurants, 930 Club, the Black Cat, jazz clubs whose names escape me -- U Street is far more lively, and with distinctly local flavor, than Dupont these days.
