Getting from Brooklyn to Long Island?!?

Fiance and I will be traveling to NY for a wedding in June. We will be staying with his sister in Brooklyn, but the wedding is on Long Island (Roslyn Heights). After doing a search I found some info on the Long Island RR. Is the the best bet from Brooklyn? Any experience with this kind of travel? How long can we expect the trip to take? Obviously, I've never been to NY and am a little worried about getting around.

Thanks so much for your help!

i don't live far far from roslyn heights, and i grew in in brooklyn. the long island rr will take you about 1 1/2hrs not including the time in brooklyn to get to the rr. your best bet it really to take car service, or stay in a hotel. feel free to email me for finer details. [email protected]

Thanks for the advice. Any idea how much the car service will cost?

Thanks again.

Brooklyn is ON Long Island (get a good map of Long Island). The Long Island RR would probably work, take a look at http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/lirr for schedules (it also has a map). I don't think there is a train station stop in Roslyn Heights itself, you may need Roslyn. Your future brother-in-law would be the best source of advice for the train station nearest his house. The other problem with the railroad would be that the church and the reception are probably not going to be near the station, and there is little or no public bus transportation in most towns, so you may end up taking a taxi or cadging a lift from one of the other guests.

Perhaps you can get a ride from other guests coming from Brooklyn, or borrow your future brother-in-law's car? You may also want to look into renting a car for a day or two.

Where in Brooklyn? Because there is a LIRR terminal in Brooklyn at the intersection of Flatbush & Atlantic Avenues. Depending on where you're coming from, you may be able to easily reach this terminal by subway, rather than going all the way to Penn Station in Manhattan.

Depends on where in Brooklyn. (I live in Brooklyn and my BF is in Long Island, so we take this trip back and forth all the time).

You can take the B,D,M,N,R,W,2,3,4 or 5 trains to Atlantic/Pacfic station to transfer to the LIRR out to Roslyn. If they are closer to the L train, you can take the L train to Atlantic Ave and transfer to LIRR from there. (East New York stop)
LIRR also makes stops in Brooklyn at Nostrand Ave and Atlantic. If they are in a part of Brooklyn that is closer to Queens, then you might be able to catch the LIRR from Jamaica or Forest Hills.

However, since this is a wedding, I can't imagine you won't be able to get a ride in somehow. But if you can't, car service will cost about $40-$50 each way, in which case a car rental would be cheaper at about $70.
