When are you coming? Spring break gets extremely busy. We had a few friends fly in today. They rented a car and the dealer said that some of the rental places are doing compacts at $70/day becuase it is so busy. (I don't know why since there is nothing big going on right now) The price will depend on when you come so be prepared it can be between $30-$90 (ironman time)

Wendy,
Why don't you book a fly/drive package for one day thru Roberts Hawaii, or one of the other packagers? That's usually how you get the best deal, and make sure you get a car. There is no other way to really get around the island, except for a bus that runs between Hilo and Kona - you wouldn't want to limit yourself to that. Good luck!

Wendy-- The Hele On bus is the only bus that goes to parts of the island. But I am not sure about times or how often. That would be limiting. Other than that, there are tours you can sign up for but you would need to talk to the different companies to see what they have. A drive, fly package could work too. (FYI July should not be too busy)

Book a car ahead of time. Once you are there, they know they've got you!
But, booking ahead of time doesn't seem to save much time. On Maui or Kuaui (forget which) everyone off the plane must have picked Alamo Rent a Car. We waited in line 1 1/2 hours to get our car! Ahead of us were 3 older ladies who each wanted their own cars (although they were together) and they bickered over prices and types of cars. I was furious! I kept saying "We reserved our car, can't we just get it now?" No luck.
Just try to hussle to the rental lot before everyone...
