Getting around in Germany/Austria

My daughter and I will be in Germany for one week this August. We are flying in and out of Frankfurt, but will most likely be exploring in Bavaria and Salzburg. I do not want to rent a car. Getting to major cities will be fairly easy by train, I imagine. However, how about traveling to and from other locations outside of the cities?

Alternatively, what other itineraries would be worth considering for a one week trip? Neither of us has ever been to Germany so we are open to suggestions.

You probably should post this on the Europe forum--I suspect you would get more answers there.

RIght.

I just got back from 2 months in Germany. Unless you're planning on going to very remote towns, the train will take you where you want to go.

Here is my itinerary for a similar trip I'll be taking in October.

1. Fly to Frankfurt. We will be staying for a few days with family and plan to take in Baden Baden and some Black Forest sights then.

2. Train to Munich, stay 3 nights. Possible side trips to Neuschwanstein, Dachau

3. Train to Salzburg, stay 3 nights. Possible side trips to Berchtesgaden, Hallstatt.

4. Train to Rothenburg, stay 2 nights.

5. Train back to Frankfurt, fly home.

All of the side trips I've mentioned can be reached by public transportation or organized day tours. Hope this helps.

Azzure - thanks for the suggested itinerary. These are some of the places we are interested in visiting, as well.
