GEORGIA MOUNTIAN GETAWAY?
Hi. I want to visit the Georgia Mountians later this fall for a romantic/cozy long weekend. Does anyone have any ideas of quaint small towns, places to stay (bed & breakfasts) where we can hike during the day and relax at night? Would love any suggestions. Thanks!

I know of three or four great bed and Brakfast places that are charming. The Callaway Gardens in GA is a nice get-way-place. It's newly renovated Gardens and you get to enjoy full breakfast. Package also includes admission to thier famous gardens, including Day Butterfly Center, Sibley Horicultural Center, and miles of biking and hiking trails. Prices start at about $66 a night. There is also The Village Inn Charming rooms, , antiques, whirlpool tubs, Walk to restaurants and shopping, Full breakfast. Near by this location is the Stone Mountain Park . Historical and spectacular nature.I know of two more as well. When exactly are you going. I can send you information on all the other bed & breakfast I know as well. I am a part time travel councelor. If you need any suggestions send me an E-mail and I'll hep you plan your vacation get-way. What type of budget are you planning on going with? So I can narrow it down.

HI
I AM ATTEMPTING TO PLAN A FOUR DAY TRIP FOR MYSELF,MOM,SISTER,AUNT,COUSIN, 1YR OLD AND 7MO. OLD. A "GIRL'S TRIP". SOME TIME TO SPEND TOGETHER. WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE CHANGING OF THE LEAVES AND DO SOME ANTIQUE SHOPPING,POSSIBLY A ONE PARK VISIT. ANY IDEAS ON A LOCATION WE COULD BUILD PLANS AROUND AS A CENTRAL POINT. MAYBE A CABIN OR BED AND BREAKFAST. ANY SPECIFIC ANTIQUE AND CRAFT AREAS.
APPRECIATE ANY INFO,
AMY

Just a slight correction to previous post- Stone Mountain Park is not really near Callaway Gardens. Callaway Gardens is in Pine Mountain which is about 1 1/2 hours south of Atlanta and Stone Mountain is on the north side of Atlanta. Callaway Gardens is a pleasant destination. Another nice place just over the GA-NC border is Highlands, NC it is a charming mountain town with lots of antique shops in the area. There are several inns and B and Bs in around there.

A correction to the above post: Stone Mountain is directly east of Atlanta.
And though I've never been there, I have heard so many good things about Highland, NC (as Steve mentions) that I feel confident in seconding his recommendation.
Be forwarned, though, many of those mountain counties are dry, so if you want to drink, it's best to call ahead or just bring your own.

Sorry that you don't seem to be getting suggestions for the north Ga mountains. We have only stayed at two B&Bs up there. One was in a house and not too romantic. The other was the Mountain Top Inn near Dahlonega. It has been a few years, but it was nice. It was built as a small lodge with a small lounge area and 4-6 rooms. The breakfast was very good. From there we went to the state parks for hikes and into Dahlonega for shopping.

I doubt Eliza is still searching for a weekend get away in the GA mountains since her post was back in 1997. But for anyone else who would like to know, in the North GA mountains there is a place called Amacolola Falls (sp?). There is a place down the street from the falls called Mountain Hideaway. It is very nice! They have a variety of different kinds of cabins, from your basic no frills cabin to a more modern cabin with a huge hot tub room. It is very charming and they have a pretty good resturant there too. You can hike around the falls and I think they have horse back ridding too.
Amy - As far as a great place to escape too in the mountains for leaf changing and antiques I would definatley like to add to the vote for Highlands, NC. I have been with my husband and stayed at a bed and breakfast called Colonial Pines which is wounderful! They have a room there that is really big (I think they call it the master suite) and it is very nice. It has a King size bed a pull out couch (I think) and a reading loft that kids could sleep in. The couple that runs this bed and breakfast also rents out a house/cabin down the street that sounds really nice too. That might be better for your group. I also would like to recomend an absolutly awesome resturant in Highlands called the Log Cabin. I don't usually like to recommend resurants cause everybody has such different taste buds, however this is to good not to mention. Hope this helps!
