Gatlinburg BUGS!
Hi
I got great information last time about places to visit in Gatlinburg. This time I have a creature comfort question! (no pun intended!) What are the bugs like in TN during June/July? Should we bring repellent? We're having a family reunion with ages 2-44.
In upstate NY where we live if the mesquitoes don't carry you off that time of year, the black flies will.
Thanks for your advice!
Anne

Dear Anne,
Bugs will not be a major problem. Bring a little off or some other pest away. No real problems.
However, for the record, the Bears are back and hungry. Apparently a record nut harvest in the Fall last year spoiled them and they have awoken hungry! 19 bears have already been relocated from around Galtinburg and the Park campgrounds. The bears will not bother you like the Grizzies in the Rockies, but still keep an eye out if camping and by all means hang your food.
When you are in Cades Cove (remember to go at Sun up or Sunset) keep an eye out for the bears. Look closely because they will be there. Get and hike or picnic in the Cove. The bears are fun to see and watch. Just don't feed them, because when all the tourists go home they still expect us to feed them!
We welcome you to Tennessee and we are glad to have you here! Remember to get into the mountains and rivers, see the wildlife, the flowers and God's great creation.

Anne,
I live in Sevier County (Gatlinburg) and hike and bike in the Park year 'round. The bugs usually aren't too bad in June/July - most likely gnats if anything - no stinging or biting - just buzzing around! I biked in the park yesterday (6/13) and had no problems - even after 20 miles of biking and sweating.
