just a thought...the USD has de-valued significantly over the past year(s). Therefore, the countries that we buy gas from want more money for their product because the dollar isn't worth what it was a year or two ago. Yeah, gas prices are higher, but you also have to take into account the fact that the buying power of the dollar isn't what it once was.

A week ago here (central NC) it was still $1.85; by Monday it was $1.92; by Thursday it was $1.99 and this morning it was $2.09. Now, there's NO WAY the gas stations filled their tanks every 1-2 days -- we are paying $2.09 for gas they bought several weeks ago at 20% less or more -- pure windfall for the distributors at the moment.
That said, I don't mind paying more if I think it'll start increasing pressure to turn to alternatives. So, sure I'm considering a hybrid, but it's a losing proposition because only the dealers can/will repair them and haven't the major manufacturers announced plans to pull out of developing battery/gas hybrids and turn to hydrogen? --Which at the very least will prolong the lead time before we can shake loose of these dinosaur-guzzling dinosaurs. Meanwhile, they're saying SUV sales haven't been hurt at all. Sigh.

Hello everyone. We live in England where present prices range from $6.40 to $8.75 per Imperial gallon (4.55 litres).
We're coming to Florida in November so will think we've got a bargain if gas is still $2.
As a matter of interest, Iraqi's were paying 2 cents per litre before the start of the war. Have no idea what they are paying now.

We just paid $1.86 for regular in Louisville, KY, but saw stations with prices up to $1.99 on the way home. It makes no sense. Regular was at $2.01 last weekend--first time it's been over $2.00 and some stations have put bags over their pumps until they can adjust them because they won't register over $1.99.

This is in response to earlxx: If you meant Hummers instead of hammers the answer is yes. Over the last 8 months or so we have seen a huge increase in the number of Hummers here in Roseville. Maybe it's the proximity to Sacramento and the famous Hummer owner who resides there now, but I can't believe the number I see on the road. They sure are monster-sized vehicles and I'd hate to fill up that gas tank at $2.16 per gallon at Safeway even with the card discount!

Tempe, AZ. it is $2.13 at our corner gas station - was $2.15 last week, os it went down a little.
It doesn't seem to bad to us in the Phoenix area becasue last summer there was a break in the pipeline that brings most of the gas to the area. Prices were this high and there was limited availability at that time.

There was an article in our paper this week, plus a story on NPR about how SUV sales have dropped since the end of March. The dealers (even Hummer dealers) are having to resort to all sorts of incentives.
My husband is in the market for a new car, so we went to a Toyota dealer today. Six months to a year for a Prius. Everyone I know who has one loves them, though--and not just for the mileage. I think the Honda hybrids are easier to come by.
I have a diesel-engine car that gets about 50 mpg highway (and most of my driving is highway), so I think I haven't been hit as hard. I can find diesel anywhere between $1.83 and $1.99 in PA and at $1.73 in NJ (if I'm willing to drive over there, pay the $3 toll, and let them pump it for me).

My boss' daughter purchase a Prius hybrid a few weeks ago and she won't get it until the end of the summer.
I heard a radio ad - Ford quad-cab pickup trucks are offering $7000 rebates right now. Think that has anything to do with how much gas they guzzle???
