Ft. Lauderdale Restaurant for Stone Crabs
Any suggestions for a restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale that serves stone crabs? Love Joe's Stone Crabs but don't want to travel into Miami. Other good restaurants in the area would also be appreciated as I'll be in the Ft. Lauderdale area for a few days.

in the 4 years i lived down there, NEVER found any stone crabs CLOSE to joe's. i personally would drive down for them - go at lunch, cheaper & faster.
there's a fun, cheap, casual place on a canal just south of lauderdale that has great garlic crabs. the something inn. sorry, can't place the exact name.

I'll let you in on a little secret. When stone crabs are harvested, they are lifted out of the water, emptied into the boat, one claw is pulled off and cooked on the boat, packed on ice, and the crab is thrown back into the water. Wherever you eat them, they have been prepared exactly the same way and bought from reliable sources. So any difference in taste is totally dependent upon how you feel about the atmosphere and service of the restaurant, or possibly the quality of the sauces they served with the crab (horrors, no one should really dunk their stone crab claws in sauce). The very best way to eat them is by getting them at a market and eating them at home, or at a "picnic" site where you can get as messy as you want and get more of them for your money. Just be sure to have them cracked for you.
However, if you are ordering them in a restaurant, just pick the place that is the most fun.
By the way, yes, I've been to Joe's a couple of times and it is a fun place, but seems so formal to sit and get messy with the crab. I'd still rather eat my claws at home where they're just as good.
Now to really answer Bonnie's question, I'd suggest 15th Street Fisheries in Ft. Lauderdale as just about as good an atmosphere and price for stone crab claws as anywhere else.
However, if you are ordering them in a restaurant, just pick the place that is the most fun.
