Ft. Lauderdale hotels near the Airport

We also need a hotel near the airport and pier (have to drop off the rental car and take the shuttle to pier).
We are booked in to Days Inn Oakland, near airport but have now been told it is not in a safe part of the city. We are getting there in evening, out in the morning and the price is right... just not sure how worried we should be about the warnings. Are we safe in the room? If we take everything out of the rental car, is that safe enough?? We won't be out walking around - just might go out for a bite to eat. Should we look for another location?
Thanks for your help.

This Days Inn is not even close to the airport or Port and is not in a good location. There are better choices that are closer. Besides all the choices in the previous postings there is a comfort suites, and another Days Inn that is closer on Federal Highway (route 1).
