FrontRoyal is where the drive starts going south, so yes. it's the closest.
Strasburg on I-81 just before you get on I-66 to Front Royal has the Strasbug Hotel, circa 1905. We have never stayed there but usually have dinner there for Christmas, our anniveraries, and when we take out of town guests to dinner. The rooms are furnished with antiques and said to be quite cozy.
In Front Royal I would suggest the Quality Inn for rooms, and there are several nice restaurants in the town.

I;m conflused.
Your other post says you are going FROM the Skyline drive to the Parkway. This post seems to say you are coming FROM the Parkway area to The Skyline Drive.
Could you please clarify what your driving plan is because it will be easier to advise where good places tostay are?

We will start our trip from Kentucky. The way to Front Royal is I-64, the north on I-81 to Front Royal. We could just go straight acrooss I-64, but that would cut Skyline Drive out of the picture. I was talking of Front Royal being the stop before we get on Skyline Drive/Blueridge Parkway.

Ah! Much clearer, now. I had the section of I-64 that begins in Staunton in my head; forgot about the section that goes into West VA.
Yup, Front Royal would be the best stop before starting the Skyline Drive. It's a beautiful area and close to Shenandoah National Park if you do any camping, hiking , or fishing.
