From Yosemite Park to Las Vegas through Nevada

We will be going from Yosemite National Park toLas Vegas in July by car. Can anyone give me information about going Rt. 120 to Tonopah Nevada and then down Rt. 95 to Las Vegas? Is this a better way than going through California? Looks good on a map, but you never know.

This is a good route. We did it a few years ago in our motorhome. Hwy 120 thought Yosemite is beautiful and after you leave the park it's very scenic too. You will also pass by Mono Lake.

Route 95 will probably be cooler in July than the central valley of California. I don't have my map software with me so I can't look up the differences in mileages but from what I remember it's very close to the same mileage. This route will probably be a little slower since you can't drive as fast as you can on the interstates. I prefer back roads. Hwy 99 is full of truck traffic.

It seems to me that Hwy 95 through Nevada is a two lane road. If you prefer to bypass Death Valley, I'd take Hwy 395 to Boron, then pick up Hwy 58 to Barstow. In Barstow, take the I-15 to LV.

to m397,

Yes hwy 95 is a two lane road and so is Hwy 395.

Taking Hwy 395, 58 and I-15 to Las Vegas is 100 miles longer than taking Hwy 120, & 95 to Las Vegas.

There are short stretches of two lane on Hwy 395 from Lee Vining until it goes southeast at Inyokern. It is mainly 4 lanes with much it of being divided highway.

m367,

It's still 100 miles farther.

Thanks for all the input. I think we will try the more scenic route on 120 and down 95. Even though it may take a little longer, it sounds more interesting!
