From LA to LV - What to see?

Spending one week in LA then heading to LV by car, is there anything we should be looking for on our way to LV. We heard about ghosttowns, anything along the way, even if it is a bit out of our way.

Thanks

It is a pretty boring trip. The ghost town you are referring to is called Calico and is not far from Barstow. You may like it but I think it is a total ripoff. Try to avoid driving to Las vegas on Friday afternoon or returning to Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. Terrible traffic.

Ditto what Larry has said. We used to make the drive quite often when we lived in LA. You drive to Barstow, get gas and maybe a burger at Macdonalds and get back in the car and finish the trip. Traffic is usually ok going to Vegas on Friday, but DEFINATELY try to avoid coming back on Sunday. You hit a spot where two freeways (I forget which ones) meet up and traffic comes to a dead stop! There is the ghost town that Larry referred to. If you want to stop to break up the trip, by all means do it. We stopped out of curiosity once. There is a big chalk sign on the hill that says "Calico" and you can see it from the freeway. There is also an outlet shopping mall that was a big deal when it opened...but now they are everywhere!

The two highways that Mary is referring to are I-15 from Las Vegas and I-40 from the East. They meet up at Barstow. On Sunday afternoon and evening the traffic is often stopped dead with tons of semis which makes driving pretty hazardous not to mention the delays.

If I were you, and had enough time, I would stop in Death Valley for a day or two on the way to Las Vegas. It's a long drive, but the scenery is nice, and there is lots of interesting spots to see in Death Valley.

It's a beautiful drive at night - there are a million stars in the sky, something we city folk don't see often. Also there's way way less traffic at night, and all the stops for food and bathroom breaks are open and less crowded.
