Hello, William!
I work in higher ed publishing (textbooks/software) and have always been curious about the trade publishing business. What do you look for in writers? Do you have writers on staff or use free lance? In higher ed publishing we look for author pedigree (tenured full professor who teaches at or went to a well known institution). I was curious how it works at Fodors.

Welcome, William - it IS nice to see there are real people at Fodor's!
And to clear up any lingering confusion, the delightful and very witty Faina sat across from me, Gualalalisa, at the recent GTG in Yountville. She is definitely a real, female person!

For one day the real life kept me off computer, and here we go - all this gossip behind my back
Actually I'm flattered, I thought my bad grammar is a dead give-away and I can never pretend to be somebody else! Thank you all for your compliments
At first I posted as Faina, after losing my password in a computer crash (don't ask, I am a proud computer illiterate) to keep my real name I came up with FainaAgain.
And if somebody(s) thinks I can be a troll: been to 2 get-togethers, my pictures posted, thank you Cigale for the link, and there is even more: I am a proud memeber of the Borg family (this is from SF vs SJtroll happy times).
I promise: I won't change, will continue jokes and sometimes close-to-troll posts. And if anybody wants to arrange a meeting: [email protected]
Jetset, so many people "got fooled" by meeting me in person! Most of all Kikahead who offered my a ride to our 2nd get-together (I don't have a car)?
I am looking forward to more fun, laughter, travels and posts. Thank you for today's entertainment!

Hello,
Back again for another round.
to snowrooster: we generally hire writers who live in the destination, who travel, and have travel writing experience. we only hire the best.
As for the GTG in Weehawken, not only am I looking forward to meeting the famous Faina, but I'm also going to bring a few editors with me.

Hello William Travis!
Do let me be the first to invite you to
the fabulous Yountville,CA GTG
November 25,2005. We will be in our
3rd year, and well sheesh, I do think
the left coast deserves some Fodor's
editors, too. Why, you'll get to meet
the Kal and the real Faina and oh so
many others!
Would be lovely to have you join us!

Hi Travis, Glad to meet you. Have to say, what are we in South Fla, chopped liver???? We are having a gathering here March 5 at 3:00pm. I think the weather will be better here, than in NYC, yes? Plus you can do an article on spring training for Fodors!!! Run it by the big guys. Judy

Greetings right back to you William. Not your department, exactly, but I've got a question from the Asia board: when IS Fodor's going to publish a new Japan guide?
The GTG in NJ looked like it was a lot of fun. Now William is going to bring Fodor's pins to the next one? If I pay the penalty and higher fare, then I guess I can reschedule my May 19 trip to Japan. After all, I've never been to a GTG, never been to Weehawken, and I NEED a Fodor's pin.

William, maybe I missed it but how much travel experience do you editors have? you talked about getting out of the city but hum, have you taken a third class train from Cairo to Luxor? Probably not, but could you tell us a little about your travel experience?
