Hi everyone!

Good for you jorr, keep up the good work as if you have good health you have everything!!

Sorry to post another
RANT: A woman who grew up with my daughter (they went 4th through 12th grade together) has died. Cancer I guess. She was a precious and fun little girl, a considerate and sweet teen and a lovely and kind woman. My heart breaks for her daughter, her husband, her parents and extended loving family. Such a shock and so sad.

But I do have some
Raves: Sounds like Starrsville will be out here in N CA in December. And friends will be coming up to SF for a long weekend in November so we will have a Gal's SF Weekend together!

Rave: My 20 year old grandson who is in college and working and has saved a bundle of money already. He could give lessons to some adults as to how to plan for a good future. I am so proud of him.

Rave or Rant: Not sure! I think summer is pretty much over. It was real cold this morning. I hope the trees at our complex turn the beautiful vibrant colors that they did last year.

Rave: All the visitors I have run into and talked to this vacation period that are enjoying our small city and the surrounding areas. From Vancouver, BC, Wisconsin and even Belgium. And everyone commented what a lovely time they were having especially due to all the helpful and nice people here. That is always good to hear.

Rave: All you wonderful and fun Fodorite's! And I have become friends with so many of you, what a treasure you all are!

Hugs and good thoughts to anyone dealing with heartbreaks, losses, illness. May better days await you.

Wishing everyone a beautiful weekend!

LoveItaly--That is so sad. Really makes you realize how things can change in an instant.

A follow up on a rave from last week. A neighbor adopted 2 little girls from Russia, and they arrived home last week. Well today I got to visit. What cute little girls, and they are settling in so well!!! Of course I couldn't understand a word they said, but they did smile back at me

I thought of the Fodors community when my friend told me of their flight home. The girls were picking on each other, and having meltdowns. Of course my friend only knows a handful of words, so had no idea what the girls were saying to each other during their arguments. She said the flight was just awful, and she was by herself with them. It made me think of the airplane/children thread on here. It definitely made me think...when we see kids acting up, we don't always know the whole story. I know my friend has no intention of taking the kids on a plane anytime soon, lol!

Rant: I am crushed because I forgot to meet my 5-year-old at the bus stop today (long story). Luckily our house is not far from the bus stop and she came running right home. We held each other and cried and cried.

Rave: I have a brave little girl who knew exactly what to do in a crisis and she said, "Mama, I forgive you" when she saw me crying.

Rave: No crazy creeps got to her before I did!

Happy Friday y'all!

MelissaH - Chicago and then Paris? I hate you!

Alisa - congratulations on your pregnancy!

ElendilPickle - second place, woo-hoo! Do you share recipes?

travel_addict - be sure to post pictures of the Elvis doggie!

StephCar - Amen to NO skinny jeans!

Angethereader - excellent news about your sister!

CheBird - Glad to have ya on board!

P_M - I've got my fingers crossed for your DH!

Ann Marie - "big booty"! Love it! I suppose you're familiar with Willie's song about kissing it good-bye?

LoveItaly - So sorry about your friend.

Good cheers to the weddings, babies, new pets, trips, good mail delivery, and phone bills!

Rant: My father got bit by a neighborhood dog, 3 puncture wounds. He told the neighbor, and the guy said to just put a band-aid on it and he would be fine. That was 4 days ago. He just called me from CA to ask if he should go to the doctor because there was some yellow stuff coming out of the holes.

Rave: Finally closed escrow on the sale of our last rental property. Out of the business. Good riddance.

Rave: Austin City Limits Music Festival this weekend - 130 bands, 8 stages. Tonight: Asleep at the Wheel. Tomorrow: Willie!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Oh kopp, getting out of the rental business..reminds me of the old saying about a person's happiest two moments in life, when they buy their boat and when the sell it. Except I do miss my boat, sob. But the same saying is true regarding rentals, lol. Congratulations! Your life will be more enjoyable I am sure. Mine certainly is.

For the mice people, for what it's worth, we had mice and squirrels in our attic and garage a few yrs back - tried the sound device and for some reason it worked on the squirrels but not the mice, we tried many other things and like some others said ended up with "the poison" that comes in those plastic triangular cases that somehow attracts the mice and they go in thru a tiny tiny hole and when they go back outside, meet their demise.......

still keep 4 in each corner of attic and 2 in back corners of garage which we replace annually and haven't had them since.....wish there was some other way to distract the little creatures, but it seems the poison is what worked for us !

Rave:
There seems to be much more raves than rants this week so that's great!
Double Rave: Yesterday's Chicago GTG with JJ, sflower, mr. sfowler and Faina! Too much fun with great people, my only rant is that it didn't happen sooner!

2 weeks to Fla and 4 weeks to Charleston, one awful week over(minus the GTG which was the only salvation) so I'm not ranting today!

Oh LoveItaly, that is such sad news, especially when someone is so young. Life is often so unfair.

mms: those girls were probably very frightened so I think the meltdown can be forgiven. They will learn english very fast and will at some point realize what lucky children they are, but this first step to fly so far and to a whole different country and culture, I think they can be forgiven even more than ONE meltdown.

It's really cold here right now..YEA!!!!! Finally!!!! LOL

Rave: DH Is coming home tonight after business travel (long week) We are going on our 1st "mini vacation" just the 4 of us to Chicago next Friday!

Rave: About sixty guests are coming to our garden tomorrow to celebrate DH's 75th birthday.

Rant: It is expected to rain -- again.

Rave: We have a tent.

Rant: The rain seems to be shorting out our landscape lighting.

Rave: At least we aren't using solar batteries; this rain has been going on for four days.

Rave: The party is catered. I don't have to cook or clean. (Did make 300 biscotti, tho')

Rave: We have a 75th to celebrate.

I have been trying to remember the name of my favorite scrambled egg dish which I just knew originated in SF. Eggs, spinach, onions, garlic, hamburger all scrambled together! Joe's Scramble!

Here is the link I found:

http://tinyurl.com/zv9jq

Joe's Special, a scramble of eggs, spinach, onions and chuck ground at the restaurant, tastes the same today as it did in World War II. Just the price has changed, jumping from 75 cents to $8.95.

Rave: Support from friends (local and cyber) during a very rough week this week.

Rave: My customers. In the midst of very chaotic times, I've just had great interactions with new customers "friends" that I've not met yet. At times, I felt like a Fodorite was on the other end of the phone or email.

Rave: I am blessed with very, very good people in my life. Had dinner & lunch with very old, dear friends yesterday and today and am so appreciative of long-term friends who more like family. And, family of origin have gone the extra mile this week.

Rave: New romantic options on the horizon.

Rant: Lives ripped apart by decisions that are "just business".

Rave: The absolute blessing of the wonderful people in my life because of "work".

A big thank you to special Fodorites for their friendship and support.

Treat to myself - I'm going to NYC and California. Using up those hotel points and shopping the AirTran fares. I wanna. I'm gonna. And, I hope to see some of you in Nov. and Dec.

Happy weekend all!

motor city girl, do forgive yourself. Everything was fine and you're still a good mom. You reminded that when my little girl (who is now 19) was in kindergarten, I traded pick-up duties with my neighbor. Well, her husband forgot to pick up the two little girls and they sat in the office and waited and waited. You will be happy to know that although she wasn't permanently scarred, it has given my DD years of guilt ammo to use on me!

I've only posted to FFRR a couple of times, but here goes:

RANT, for sure: The company DH works for may close. I can't imagine what we will do. And I hate that it is up in the air, and may be that way for more than 6 months. He is 51 and I don't know how hard it will be to find a new job. His is our main income, so... Lord knows what will be. I'm just trying to have faith.

Smaller Rant: DD and SIL are coming to town next weekend and we are off for a long planned weekend in DC. Prepaid Priceline room, and expensive concert tickets, so no cancelling. But we haven't seen them for a couple of months.

Rave: we are going away for a nice weekend in DC.

Best wishes to all in need.

PAGING ESCARGOT:

I need your help!! We have squirrels in the attic, what is that gizmo you used to scare them away? Poison isn't an option for us, they're so cute we just can't kill them. But we don't like hearing them run around in the attic either.

CAPH, how scary about that driver, but I'm glad nobody was hurt. So you dress like a pumpkin at work, eh? Do the kids all call you The Great Pumpkin? ;-)

LoveItaly, I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter's friend, how very sad for her family.

kopp, I know how it feels to retire from the landlord business. DH and I did it for 13 years in total. We made some good money with rental property, but we're glad we got out when we did.

seetheworld, Happy Anniversary!! WOW, 27 years?? Having seen your picture, it's obvious you must have been only 12 when you were married. I guess we won't be seeing you on the board tomorrow night, as you and Mr. STW will be otherwise engaged....

Rave: My husband was able to get first class tickets to Hawaii using frequent flier miles! We will be going to Maui, Oahu and Kauai next August.

Rave: My birthday is coming!

Rave: My husband commented that I am noticeably more relaxed since starting a new job.

Rave: I found a new recipe for fish that my husband and I really liked.

LIFE IS GOOD!!

tuscanlifeedit, I know exactly what you are going through. My DH is on layoff notice as we speak and he's just turned 50. The uncertainty is the worst part and the waiting is hard. It's OK to hope for the best, but prepare yourself by updating his resume and maybe start doing a preliminary search. You might end up doing this for nothing, but at least you'll be one step ahead if the company does close.

I hope you will be encouraged to know that despite his ripe old age of 50, my DH is already getting some interest in his resume and I think he'll find something soon. I will send good vibes your way and wish you the best. Keep in touch and let us know how it goes.
