I shall be visiting Chicago in September. Best place to stay please in Oak Park re: Frank Lloyd Wright.

We stayed at a hotel in the center and took the elevated to Oak Park. No problem.

I agree stay in downtown chicago and take the El (green line) directly to Oak Park. I lived one town next to Oak Park for 16 years and I honestly cannot even picture a hotel anywhere in that town. I don't think there is one. Hope this helps.

Read "Loving Frank," by Nancy Horan before you go. It will give you insight into his life. Although it is technically fiction, it is very true to fact with only some missing info inserted for flow and continuity.

I read it just before going to Taliesin West in Phoenix and it gave me a much deeper appreciation and understanding of Wright, his work and his life.

Deb, I read it after hearing it discussed on NPR. What a fantastic book! The day I finished it we happened to be staying in a hotel in Austin with a huge Frank Lloyd Wright book on the coffee table, and I stayed up part of the night devouring it. What a wonderful glimpse into the man behind the architecture...and the woman behind the man. Did your DH read it? Mine wasn't quite as enamored with it as I, understandably I guess. All the times we were in Phoenix and never did Taliesin...how I regret it now!

A couple of years ago we stayed at the Wright Inn in the Oak Park Historic district. We had a room with vintage furnishings--lovely. Our son, daughter-in-law, and small grandson had a family room which had a small kitchen and sitting area--perfect for them. The inn had a wonderful restaurant on the main floor, with nice jazz music. Overnight parking for hotel guests was a bit of a drawback. You could unload in front of the hotel, but had to park in a garage a couple of blocks away.

The location of the inn was ideal for our visit. We could walk to all the historic Wright homes. The neighborhood seemed very safe and the walking was lovely. Across the street from the inn was a park--again perfect for our small grandson. We'd happily stay there again.

Thanks Kathleen for your information about the Write Inn. I visited Chicago Sept 2006 but didn't manage F.Lloyd Wright so thought it might be nice to stay there before I catch Amtrak to Colorado
