Fox Car Rental

I need to rent a car for a week in and out of SFO. I have a res that I made months ago and it is quite expensive. Current prices are even worse except for Fox Car Rental. I am not familiar with them at all. Has anyone used them and are they as reliable as all the other rental companies?

Fox used to be offsite at SFO. You took the AirTrain to the rental car location, then a Fox van to their lot about 5min away. I heard that they are no located alongside all the other guys.

I've used them several times and never had any problems. So if, by reliable, you mean 4 wheels and an engine that runs well, yes, they are fine.

Their cars don't seem to be as new as Hertz or Avis, but they've never been clunkers or anything of that sort. They might buy their cars from Hertz or elsewhere when they get to 20 or 30k miles rather than new off the lot - just a guess.

I like to photo the car from all angles at checkout to document any damage, and am sure to mark every scratch and ding on the inspection sheet, even if it takes a few min to bring the sheet back to the booth for signoff.

I like to use www.orbtiz.com for comparison shopping for rental cars then go directly to the rental car co website to reserve. In my experience (3-4x/yr) dollar.com usually has the best rates at SFO.

J62 - thanks for that link. I think I may pass because of fear that the car may be a bit old.

Did you try bidding on Priceline? Even in the summer you can sometimes save substantially. Hotwire works as well. And you will get a car from one of the major companies. Best, the bid includes all taxes and fees.

Doug, I have never used Priceline for anything. It sounds like this is a good time to start. When you have a car reservation, can you cancel it or is it paid in full and cancellation not allowed? Could I end up with Fox?

Priceline rentals are nonrefundable and non-changeable. You will only end up with one of the top five national companies. Avis, Hertz, Dollar, National, or Thrifty.

DO YOUR SELF A FAVOR AND DONT RENT!
*I reserved a 7 passenger SUV---fit seven people but only had room for 3 bags. (it is stated on the internet) REALLY? Looks like a good deal but if you look at the other car companies they are charging more for this SUV.
*Car was old, had 35,000 miles on it
*Car was not clean, smelled awful like smoke had to switch it to a different car.
In Colorado the rental car pick up is in a weird location at the airport
THE KICKER-----
*THEY CHARGE A $100 RENTAL DEPOSIT.
I called the service representative when I noticed they only credited back $37. She told me I was billed an early return fee of $10 per day ($50). I could understand returning the car later---being billed a charge---but not returning it early. I had returned the car at 4:00 pm not at 10 pm. I have rented from many rental companies and I am truly appalled at this charge. The rates are great but this is ridiculous. I WILL NEVER RENT FROM FOX RENT A CAR AGAIN!

Don't worry, I was researching the same thing for my 2012 trip so late posts still can help other people.

I found some mischief on some of the postings about Fox car rental when I was doing my research. We had an excellent experience with them this March out of Oakland but before our actual rental I started having second thoughts after I noticed so many negative comments.

Then I realized they were coming about once a month from someone just registering here for the single purpose of trashing Fox. Could it be a disgruntled ex employee with a grudge and time on their hands?? Deborah
