Floridafan, I am happy to report we are on our way to Seagrove tomorrow morning. Decided to move our trip up and see the beaches while they are perfect. I think it is a good gamble that the oil won't reach us this week. Thank you so much (and Renee) for keeping us apprised of situation. I'll check this site periodically just to keep in touch.

We are taking our boat out tomorrow -- it should be a beautiful day. We will go to Shell Island, off Panama City Beach. No oil here yet.

The containment box (dome) has now been placed over the second leak. The first leak was at the end and had a valve welded over it. So now only one leak left!

We can not move our vacation up and we are going to Seagrove May 22. I'd love to know what anybody knows down there. I have 5 kids who are very excited about this, and I'd love to think we can go to those sandy white beaches. I'm hoping the best for those people who live down there too!

I live here and rent condos, too. I have been taking photos and walking beaches daily. No sign of oil or smell. If you doubt it, my website is YourFriendAtTheBeach. We can't tell which way the wind might blow the spill - but so far, it has been away from us. I update daily for all my friends!

I'm afraid I don't have good news. Dauphin Island, AL has reports of tarballs washing ashore.

http://blog.al.com/live/2010/05/tarb...ast_oil_s.html

It's only a matter of time before the Panhandle gets it.

I'm guessing that tarballs may be making their way to Gulf Shores by Wednesday, Orange Beach by Friday, and Pensacola Beach by late next weekend. I imagine Destin is two weeks out.

Panama City and points east probably have at least a couple of weeks at this rate.

I hope I'm wrong.

THANKS ..this is helpful. I have another place in mind in St. Augustine. Anyone know much about that place?
We WANT to go to Seagrove but we really don't want to pack up and drive 5 kids only to have our beach shut down while we're there.
Anyone who is hearing more predictions for the Destin area, let me know. We are leaving for Seagrove in 2 weeks (or somewhere else.)

Oh and are they saying that if the tarballs come ...is it just a difference of being able to walk by the water versus going in the water...to me we're fine to just walk by it and stay out of it for the most part but obviousl if it closes...

In all honesty, St. Augustine would be a safer bet at this moment. I love the Panhandle but I'm afraid its days are numbered.

The containment box failed as ice crystals formed on it (it's very cold at 5000 ft below sea level even in the Gulf). There has been no progress.

I think the east coast of Florida is the best bet now.

The NOAA oil slick maps show the oil moving westward away from the Destin area. Prevailing winds are pushing the oil westward. Destin does not appear affected.

I'm currently down here on vacation in Destin and we were on the beach today. It was absolutely beautiful and no smells or tar balls. We booked water activities tomorrow through www.tripshock.com and we were told by the reservationist that there has been no sign of oil in the water. Just looking at the local newspaper in the Destin area, i believe that the local government here is being very proactive. If you're thinking on coming down here on vacation, I wouldn't write off your plans just yet. Just wait and see. Nearly all rental and hotel companies are letting you cancel last minute which is nice.

Hi all, back home from Hotlanta and happy to not smell, much less see, any oil here on Pensacola Beach.

MAP,

You should be in Seagrove by now, having a wonderful time on still-pristine beaches.

Reneecullum, noodlemom & puggies3,

As of today at 1:00 the NOAA projections (on the website I mentioned above) for the next 24, 48, and 72 hours have the spill moving ever so slightly to the West. It began today more or less due South of Mobile Bay, still well offshore. By Thursday, it's W of there. As long as the winds stay out of the E or SE (as predicted for the next several days) the "spill" should continue to move away from us. A N wind helps, as well. A W or SW wind, like we had a few days ago, pushes it closer.

I've been reading the papers for the days I was gone. Everyone keeps stressing that we aren't going to be hit with a thick layer of black goo like Alaska experienced with the Exxon/Valdez incident. What we'll get - and when - is still unknown but it will be scattered "stuff" not one massive glob. You can read daily updates at www.pnj.com/oilspill. There has been no mention here (P'cola Beach) of closing the beaches should we begin to get tarballs, or oil slick "mousse." There was an excellent article in the Sunday edition of the Pensacola News Journal which explained the difference in sheens, slicks, and tar balls.

I'll post anything new here, daily if I can. This week-end we're showing at an Arts Festival in P'cola so I'll be out of pocket from Friday mid-day through Sunday. But as I mentioned, the PNJ and NOAA are doing daily updates.

Floridafran,

Were you able to swim in the water? Does the water appear as clear as it normally does? How about Orange Beach? My sister is heading there in June and she's been asking about it.
