Foodie Portland area (maine)
Taking a foodie to the Portland Maine area this summer .I know the Portland Food Market is gone. What should't we miss within about an hour of there?
Breweries, farm markets , bakeries, chocolate factories?. I'm not really looking for restaurants, but anything else of interest would be good.

Don't miss Standard Bakery, right across the street from where the farmers market was. We love getting breakfast pastries there. They also have great coffee, and a few tables outside to eat your treats at.

I love Standard Bakery.I'm obsessed with their scones!
Any other ideas? Need not be in Portland as I will be driving around the area, so anything from the MA/ME border up to Freeport is fair game.
Vermont is so full of microbreweries--what's Maine like in that area?

Any more Maine travelers on board?
Anything between Kittery and Freeport?
Anyone familiar with Classic Custard In Freeport? That and any other worthwhile "road food" stop suggestions welcome, (but no seafood ideas--no clamhuts/lobster shacks)

The Portland Public Market is gone, however, the farmer's market is very popular on Wednesday's in Monument Square and Saturday's at Deering Oaks Park. Breweries: Shipyard and Gritty's in Portland. Gritty's is a brew pub with locations in Portland, Freeport and Lewiston. Shipyard is a brewery that offers tours. Stonewall Kitchen's main store and production facility is just off the Maine Turnpike in York, right on route 1. Its a great place to visit. Don't know where you're from, but ME/MA doesn't have a border! (Sorry to be picky!) Also, Standard Bakery is across the street from the ferry terminal on Congress street. Don't know why people think it was near the market. If you're interested, the Shaker Village in New Gloucester has an herb business with production using very old techniques. I've been there a long time ago but there was an article in yesterday's Portland Press Herald that you might look up. There's also a winery in Casco (on the northeast shore of Sebago lake) called Blacksmith. I haven't done the tour but it may be fun. There's also a very cool art gallery/gift shop near it called the Cry of the Loon.
