I think you mean "extract," not "extrapolate."
(Sorry. Couldn't resist.)

I agree Leona, it seems we're wasting a lot of time trekking through needless posts to find anything of particular value as of late.

wow? How do you figure?

Here is another definition from the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Section 2 applies to the use of extrapolate in the previous post.

One entry found for extrapolate.

Pronunciation: ik-'stra-p&-"lAt
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): -lat?ed; -lat?ing
Etymology: Latin extra outside + English -polate (as in interpolate) -- more at EXTRA-
transitive senses
1 : to infer (values of a variable in an unobserved interval) from values within an already observed interval
2 a : to project, extend, or expand (known data or experience) into an area not known or experienced so as to arrive at a usually conjectural knowledge of the unknown area <extrapolates present trends to construct an image of the future> b : to predict by projecting past experience or known data <extrapolate public sentiment on one issue from known public reaction on others>
intransitive senses : to perform the act or process of extrapolating
- ex?trap?o?la?tion /-"stra-p&-'lA-sh&n/ noun
- ex?trap?o?la?tive /-'stra-p&-"lA-tiv/ adjective
- ex?trap?o?la?tor /-"lA-t&r/ noun

Could have been either word that is the correct one.

A is to B; as Y is to ?

If all you needed was "A" and "B" - while that "?" just hung out, then the information was extracted.

However, if you got the above statement and arrived at "Z" and that made you happy, then you just committed extrapolation.

well, yeah, Diana, I guess if Leona meant that she has to get past all the "opinionated" comments & then "infer" any relevant travel information from what remains.
Commit extrapolation??? Is it a crime to exprapolate ???

I've been blamed several times for being snippy and that certainly was never my intent.

I'm really sorry if I offended anyone by mentioning Prada. I honestly never thought about it being an issue.

I think it's just the kind of exchanges, as above, that make people think twice about posting here. Who really cares exactly which word as the line is VERY FINE? Another thought about Fodors posters is that the ones on the European board who decide to flame do it in the cute-siest, most sarcastic way possible. On the U.S. board, they can be just in-your-face mean. Funny the difference. It is a shame because there is so much to be learned here. But this drives people away.

First of all....GIRLS, relax!

You have taken a thread about family and turned it into an english debate!

OK then, on subject. I enjoy ecxchanging advice on this forum and try to give back when the subject moves to an area that I have some knowledge and experience in.

At the same time, I really appreciate a pun or double entendre'(not sure how to spell that)...good or corny, all the same to me. I admit to trying to inject humor to my posts perhaps I have even been a smart alec. To me it's all part of the fun of participating here or other forums.

If somebody irritates or is ignorant I just move on, I don't quit. Sooooo...please don't give up, turn the other cheek and keep writing whether it is asking or answering!

Hello Leelani! Clifton, Diana, Meesthare & I are just bored & having a little fun with this! Nobody really cares! Gyppielou expressed concerns about this place becoming "stale". Looks like that isn't going to happen! At least not today.

I must confess...
I extrapolate, but only in the privacy of my own room - with the door closed!

Hey:

About to venture off onto another trip and just wanted to jump in...

I found this site a couple of years ago when I was planning my first trip after 9-11 (taking my son who suffers from Autism to DisneyWorld).

Over the years I've come to rely & trust you guys for information. All I look for is the info. I don't really care about spelling, race, lifestyle or personal issues...Just keep giving me the info..what I learn from you I share with others. Some really in need and some not (cause I'm fortunate enough to straddle both worlds).

So just keep giving up the information. I'm pretty good at figuring out what's needed and who's just trying to be a @#$% head.

So...To all those who've hooked me up with creative ideas and supplied me with a wealth of knowledge..thanks!

Wow - that last post did not come out as I meant it to. I think people nitpicking about proper wording does make some people nervous about posting. But I didn't mean those particular exchanges were "mean". In the next sentence, I was talking about times when people on the U.S. Board are really hateful to each other for no reason. I don't think the above exchanges are mean, just not necessary.

I know, I know - and I apologize. I just, as I said, couldn't resist. Perhaps I should have. I was certainly amusing myself when I wrote it.

I have always been greatly impressed by the time and effort people put into this board providing advice FREE OF COST.

A few newbies on the other hand seem to take this as some sort of birthright and get snippy when their questions are not immediately answered or if they are chastised for asking a question that has been answered several times before.

Then there are others who come back to complain about the advice that was given - like they were forced into following the advice of fodorites.

Granted there are rude, obnoxious folks but just ignore them.

And as for designer name dropping, it could be relevant. If someone tells me I've been to that club in jeans - might be useful to know she was wearing designer jeans worth several hundreds before I show up in my twenty dollar Old Navy jeans(they are sooo comfy).

Besides some people work hard to be able to afford designer stuff and want to tell the world about it - so what. If it seems annoying ignore it.
