Are you coming to California or Florida? For California: if you have 2 weeks, you can do a lot more. Two adults will probably have enough of Disneyland after one day, same with Universal. The summer hoards will be gone in October, although both places will still be busy. Suggestions: Santa Monica promenade, Getty Center (a MUST), shopping (or window shopping) in Beverly Hills or South Coast Plaza (near Disneyland), Mission San Juan Capistrano, Olvera Street. NBC or Paramount Studios. You could also go north to the Santa Barbara wine country or south to San Diego and have a wonderful 2 weeks. Feel free to e mail if you would like details.

Rob, Hello i am from Fleetwood,Lancs.i presume you are from Blackpool ,Lancs. small world mate!
We have been to Florida 6 times and a few occasions we have been in October. It is a good time to go, the weather will be hot , probably around 85 degrees most days. Not much rain.
As a self-confessed Florida "expert" (probably being a bit big headed) i am a little confused by what you mean by 1 week Universal?. Universal Studios has now been expanded and overall is probably the best theme park in Florida( it certainly is for Adults) but a couple of days at most will cover it.
If you go to Universal for a day you get a second day for FREE , providing you have i-d with you (passport/driving license etc).
Most visitors to Florida either stay 14 nights in Orlando or do 7 nights Orlando/7 beach resort. Which are you doing? have you already booked?i can recommend some hotels if required , plus places to eat ,shop etc.
As i said earlier, we (myeslf, wife and young son)have been several times to Florida not just Orlando but all over including Miami,Clearwater,Naples and Ft Lauderdale.
I can give you thousands of tips on what to and where to go . One of the most important things to remember when visiting a Disney theme park is to realise that there will be times when you will be waiting ages to get on a particular ride (all the theme parks get very busy), plus walking around all day in 80 degress plus heat takes a lot out of you.
The general tip is arrive early after breakfast at say Magic Kingdom , spend the morning there , leave at lunch-time ensuring you get your hand stamped on exit and return after tea.
Drink plenty of liquids and take your time, you will have plenty of time to see everything. Plan ahead which parks you will visit certain days leaving plenty of time for rest, it is very tiring walking around Universal all day( you will know what i mean!).
I could talk all day about Florida , if you have specific questions please e-mail me direct, it really depends on how long you are going for, where you are staying etc. I presume you have not been before? Are you renting a car? it is essential that you do in order to get around.
I look forward to hearing from you nd will answer any questions you have.

October in Florida will be very nice. The weather will still be "tropical" and the kiddies are back in school.

I personally would not want to spend any time at Disney/Universal unless I needed to entertain kids, but that's just my preference (different strokes for different folks). But I must say that one week at each would have to grow tiring for even the biggest disney/theme park fanatic and you'd be missing out on a lot more that Florida has to offer.

Other suggestions with distances from Orlando:

1. Cape Canveral (60 KM)- good tour if you're at all interested in our space program, and the beaches (Cape Canaveral or Cocoa Beach) are pretty nice.

2. Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater (150 KM)- medium size city with a great Cuban Quarter (Ybor City - lots of bars/restaurants/shops). Clearwater Beach and St. Pete beach are nice beach towns.

3. Miami/South Beach (350 KM) - big city with a large Hispanic population. South Beach is the best attraction. Beautiful sandy beaches, great art deco hotels, lots of great restaurants and nightlife. Very chic or very casual, however you want it.

These, of course, reflect my personal preferences, but if you want to post back and give me an idea of yours, I can provide other options.

We happen to love Disney, and have had terrific vacations there, with and without our child in tow. In fact, it's actually great fun to go without kids! You likely will not be waiting in long, long lines in October, (by that I mean nothing over half an hour) unless you're there during a school break or holiday. If you enjoy waterparks, Disney's are the best, and it makes for a great afternoon cool-down, especially if you'll re-enter the parks in the evening (you may not want to leave, once you're floating around Typhoon Lagoon!) For adults, I would suggest Typhoon Lagoon over Blizzard Beach unless you are truely "kids at heart", as we are. Typhoon Lagoon is more romantic. Also, people tend to forget about Disney's Discovery Island, which can be a lovely afternoon break, strolling along amongst free-roaming birds, and other small animals (wear a hat and expect the obvious). No matter what you choose, you will have a great time at Disney. I also agree that 2 days at Universal is plenty, although I haven't been to the new park yet. Enjoy!

Reading the expertise of the Fodor's travellers re Disney, I'd like some advice. Travelling from Ireland to Orlando on 27th Oct for 8 days, 2 adults & 2 chlidren 11 & 13 years. Been given lots of conflicting advice, can the "experts" give me theirs??
Will I need to hire a car??
Private house( V's hotel/motel & location?
Essential/Must see for kids & adults?
Tips on where to eat reasonably.

My husband and I are also going to be doing a fly drive in Florida this year, I thought the weather was still abit rough in October (as we were thinking of going at this time)So we've probably decided on early November (we would be going for 2 weeks)Is November a good time to go or is October better. I am getting confused noe.
