FLORIDA CITY to THE KEYS
We are planning to spend a few days in KEY LARGO, ISLAMORADO, and MARATHON. IT is difficult to find affordable accomadations at that time of year. We are thinking about staying in Florida City and driving down to the KEYS each day(3). Is that a decent alternative? What is Floida City like?

Can you find anything affordable in Key Largo, instead? There isn't anything in Florida City to do or to see, and it is a rather poor area. And that is a lot of driving since most of Hwy. 1 is only one lane each way, and can be VERY congested during holiday times and week ends.

I lived in Florida City for about a year and agree with JoAnn. When are you planning to come down? I would think you could find something in Key Largo. If not, I hate to say it, but I would re-think your Keys vacation plans and visit sometime when you can afford to stay down there. Not that what you proposed can't be done, but there is nothing in Florida City and it isn't the safest place for tourists to walk around at night. And, on weekends and holidays traffic in and out of the Keys, as mentioned above, can be nerve-racking.

for a different opinion.....we stay in florida city and drive down to Largo/Islamorada to go diving....the hotels in the keys cost twice as much and are twice as vile (IMO)...true it involves more driving and nothing beats actually staying in the keys but....if you don't have the $$$ what ya gonna do........Florida city is just a place to sleep cheap and fill up the gas tank.

If you like factory outlet shopping and will only be staying a few nights in Florida City and driving to Key Largo and spending the day, it shouldn't be too bad. It's only about a 25 minute drive from Florida City to Key Largo and plenty to do for the day in Key Largo and great restaurants; then drive back up for the night. Really not that bad. Going to Marathon and back doesn't sound like alot of fun but I'd plan that one for the last day trip. AFter all, I've done many a day trip from Key Largo to Key West and Little Palm Island for brunch and the drive in the day is beautiful! Do what you can do and have a great time!
