It really depends on whether you want a beach vacation or not. If you want to relax on a beach all day go for Miami! I think of Key West as a big party.

We are just coming back from a 14 days trip in Florida, and I advice Key West. Miami is a big city, to big,and we didn't like it. As European we always dreamed about Miami beach like we saw it in tourist programs on tv, but in reality it is not special at all. Key West is a paradise. Beautiful houses, much to see and much to do, good food, many hotels..., and a nice little beach: Fort Zachary Taylor. Very, very relaxing. We stayed 2 days and it was not enough. If you consider your stay a a holiday, dan you'll better go to Key West

I would skip both. Too touristy. What you want is something like Lakeland or Sarasota. Beautiful towns, one with water and no obnoxious tourists.

Glad to hear that your trip was good and that you did go on to Key West. Did you ever stop at the Everglades?

I'm from NY and plan a visit to Everglades and Key West with my husband next May. Really looking forward to it.

Yes, we did the Everglades. There are many places there to stop, but of course we couldn't see everything. What we liked the most was "Billy Swamp" (big cypress). We did the airboat and we saw alligators swim. It was fantastic. You can also do a safari ride. We also went via the Tamiami trail to Miccosukee village, but that was a very sad place. Billy Swamp was better. On this travel talk everybody adviced me to use repellent against bugs, but it is not necessary (or we were lucky). The bugs were everywhere, but the didn't bite. Have a good trip to Florida. We had a very good time and we'll go back.

Depends, where are you traveling from.
Don't dismiss the panhandle, if you are traveling from the north. I've been to many places, east coast, west coast, but my heart (as far as I've seen) belongs in Destin or anywhere along the emerald coast.
