Flamingo or Luxor
I have looked at both and even though the Luxor is More $$ nothing special about it really standsout (except the Pyramid!) Has anyone stayed at the Flamingo recently and if so, in what tower and was the room clean . I heard the pool is amazing and the hotel is in such a great location. SOme posts are negative but I'd like to hear what others think who may have actually stayed at both or have info. so we can decide. We are early 30's and will be going over Memorial Day. We don't usually dine at the hotel we stay at so I am not concerned with their restaurants. We have stayed at Mirage (which I love but would like to try something new), Monte Carlo (which I found so boring) and Stardust (college - too far up the strip for me). Thanks for your help!

If you found Monte Carlo boring then you're not going to be wowed by Flamingo. (Its pool area is nice, but that's about it).
I'm not sure what you're after. If you're looking in the mid-price hotel range and you want an exciting theme and great rooms, then Luxor and Flamingo won't qualify.
If you didn't like Stardust's location away from the center of the Strip then Luxor will probably be a turn-off for you, too.
If you simply want a decent hotel in a good location with a clean room, then there are many options, and Flamingo qualifies.

We have been regulars at the Flamingo for years and were there just last month. The pool area and gardens are definitely very outstanding. It is a wild life habitat and they even have penguins. The Flamingo doesn't have towers. It is U shaped. We always get a N/S room on the upper floors facing the strip close to the Bellagio so we can watch the water show from our room. The rooms have been recently renovated so it was quite nice. I don't know if they have all been renovated. We are fully comped casino VIPs so they always give us the best room.
Other than the pool area and gardens, the Flamingo is not outstanding, especially for younger folks. We like it because we are comfortable there and it is like home. It definitely is not in the same class as the Mirage.

We stayed at the Luxor in April. We reserved a pyramid room for $85 a night, then renegotiated it down to $65 a night. When we arrived we were given a free upgrade to the tower, which are much bigger, newer rooms. For $65 a night we were quite pleased with our very comfortable room on the 16th floor, overlooking the mountains. The Luxor has a nice upscale, somewhat sedate feel to the lobby and casinos even though it is one of the lower priced hotels. The Egyptian motif is quite interesting and well done. The pools are huge, but only 4' deep, and not well shaded. The other drawback is that it is at the south end of the strip, a bit of a hike to the Bellagio area.

We stayed at the Luxor a few years ago and loved it. We reserved a room in the pyramid with our windows facing the strip. It was great to draw up the blinds at night and sit and watch the twinkling lights of Vegas from our slanted window. The room with the egyptian theme was great. The same theme was carried throughout the hotel and we found it to be very nice and tastefully done, not at all tacky. There were some great restaurants and shops, and the massage I had at the spa was terrific. All in all it was a lot of fun and I would stay there again in a second.
Thanks!

Monte Carlo is about as close to 'theme-less' as you'll find on the strip. And the decor is a lot like a normal non-LV hotel. Nothing wrong with that, but compared to the more meorable LV hotels it seems dull. No jungle foliage, indoor canals, pharaohs hanging from the walls, etc.
MC is a good value, and that's its strong suit.

I stayed at the Flamingo five years ago so I can't comment on current room quality...however, our standard room was very nice, clean, and large, with a little sofa. It was decorated in pretty shades of aqua and peach. We enjoyed our stay there and the location was perfect, right in the middle of the strip.

I am in the midst of a 3-week battle with the Flamingo over a pre-paid reservation we made for friends. The hotel has "lost" the check we sent, and our friends were made to pay when they checked out. I have made 27 phone calls so far and have encountered nothing but major attitude from the people in accounting. Calls are not returned, and there seems no way to get a response. I sure wouldn't stay there!

Underhill, I'm trying to figure out your post. You sent a check to prepay a hotel? What century are you living in? That's what credit cards are for. I haven't heard of anybody doing anything like that with a check in years. And if you haven't now realized it, you've just experienced one of the main reasons for using a credit card for such matters.
If you had used a credit card, such a "mistake" by the management would have now been resolved after one phone call. Meanwhile, I too ask what the problem is. Don't you have the cancelled check?

By the way, how can Underhill have received a canceled check? The hotel is claiming the check was lost so it was never deposited; that's the reason why no prepayment was ever recorded and the friend had to pay.

Thanks for all your help - I think we are going to book the Flamingo - If the room is bad I will keep trying untill we get a new, upgraded one. It seems that there are good rooms and bad ones (as with a lot of hotels that are older). THe location does it if for me - during the day I don't mind a walk but at night I want to be in that area of the stip or cab it over to the Palms. I really want to stay at the Mirage again but my husband has convinced me to try something new.
As for the Monte Carlo- I found the rooms very nice for the $ but the hotel didn't have any "Character" to me. The pool area was nice - but that was about it - the food court was like being in a mall and the brew pub was OK but to go once. I would stay here if you got a good price and plan on being out and about. I just wouldn't put it on the list of "special" Vegas hotels. You will have fun wherever you stay on the strip (mostly!) And the Monte Carlo was clean and updated when I was there - but that was 5 years ago. I know people who stayed last year and thought the rooms were very nice for the $.

francophile, I think you're missing the point of why we're questioning that cancelled check. If they never cashed it and really did lose it, then one call would have shown that, and he either needs to send them a new one and credit his "guests" or arrange for something else. Why in the world would someone make 27 calls if there was no sign that the check had ever been deposited. One call would tell you that it was indeed lost! What is the point of calling back over and over again. Checks do get lost and obviously this one was if it was never deposited.

I just returned from a short stay at the Flamingo. Like you I was a bit concerned because of the negative posts. The pool is currently drained because of a beach party with Jimmy Buffet scheduled for next weekend. They are inagurating his new Margaritaville restaurant. The water goes back in the pool after the event.
The rooms on the 28th floor were clean, large and basic. Nothing special and I prefer a coffee maker in the room so I don't have to schlep down to the lobby to get started. The food was fine at three of the restaurants and the staff was quite amiable.
Specify you want one of the refurbished rooms. The location is super, you can walk any where (I suggest you walk to Olives, great food, and the Bellagio for O).

We personally, love the Monte Carlo for all of the reasons you mentioned. I like it because it is smoke free, clean, bright, and rather intimate. If you have been out and about the MC is like your home when you are ready to END the LV madness. And, big factor for us, you don't have to walk two miles through smoke filled, VERY loud casinos to get to your room, like you do in so many of the hotels.
The rooms are very nice, the people are very nice, and the service is comfortable. The food court is there for families. We stayed there with three kids, and everyone LOVED that they could choose where they wanted to eat. Our two teenage girls stayed there alone one night while we went out and were very safe to go down and get their own meal.
The Italian restaurant, forget the name, we have eaten in many times. Very good and reasonable.
After staying often at the MEGA hotel/casinos, sometimes you need a haven to just get away from it all. MC gives you that opportunity, and doesn't nickel and dime you left and right. They don't even charge for parking, and that is amazing these days, where many hotels get an additional $25 out of you per night.
So, IMO, MC is perfect for some people, families, who don't want to be barraged with the "LV scene" 24/7.

For cmcfong: So the big pool is drained for the Buffet concert? Are they planning on using the pool as the stage? We picked up that promotion and will be there this Thurs-Sunday. I keep thinking this is too good to be true...free tickets to the concert and $60 room. What else have you heard about it? Our confirmation gives little details. Don't even know the time.
