First time in Portland (OR) - hotel area info

Hello,

Will probably stay at Econolodge (1889 SW 4th Avenue) and would like to hear whether it is a good location to stay. Planning not to rent a car.

Thanks.

I wouldn't stay all the way down there. You'll have access to the free downtown trains, but it's a bit too far removed from everything.

If you're on a budget, consider the 4 Points Sheraton on 1st or use Priceline for a 3 or 4 star (Priceline being my first choice).

That location is fine, Midori, at the south end of town, a couple blocks from Portland State Univ. If you don't want to walk the 10-12 block to the center of town, you can hop on the streetcar, which runs very near the Econolodge. You'll almost certainly want to use mass transit to get to the Pearl District and NW 21st & 23rd, Portland's hottest shopping and dining areas.

Brian and beachbum, thanks for your inputs. I tried Priceline but it seems hotels are fully booked from Oct 11-17. Will keep trying anyway. Regards. Midori

Midori, I don't know what your budget is but you might look at the Holiday Inn over in the NW section of town too. It is on 2333 Nw Vaughn Street.

As beachbum stated, the location is fine, just not optimal in my opinion. In fact, I can see how some would prefer it's quieter, tree-canopied location.

At this late date, I wouldn't kill yourself trying to find something else. You'll have a great time.
